If you don't feel safe confronting him face to face with your issues maybe you arrange a meeting with him and your boss together. It may be that he also has issues with others in the work place that can be sorted by simply talking them out. Gadgets and other snide measures will never be as effective as direct action.

If you don't feel anything would be gained by talking I think you'll just have to man up and offer to settle it in the car park, toe to toe. Even if he has the better of you I'm sure you'll find you'll command his respect after.
