And the sudden sea change in conversation:

- "So you cook the books for XYZ?"

- "D'you know if I stand here I can just about see the church tower over that Yew there. That'll need a haircut before too long - Do you know Burgess? He's very good with Yew. What do you have? Beeches?"

Re: Urban Fogey - Country Fogey

well Michael- I get my bits of string from the village store or post office.

Whilst not a fogey this chap- shows some characteristics of fogeydom  www.wilflunn.com  have a scout around his site and have a look in the rare, rude and handy section-  see how usefull a piece of string is for repairing a tea pot.

Re: Urban Fogey - Country Fogey

puddings are  fogey.

spotted dick and custard.
treacle tart and custard
rhubarb crumble and custard
jam roly poly and custard
apple pie and custard
chocolate pudding and custard.
gooseberry crumble and custard

you may have notced a theme developing here- fogeys like custard.

however they would never countenance the use of custard with steak and kidney pudding , yorkshire pudding or black pudding

Re: Urban Fogey - Country Fogey

Quite right uncle Jack -Nancy Mitford was the one who described the workings of the English language as far as U and non-u words and phrases.

for example:
non U would use a toilet - U would use the loo or lavatory
non U would say pardon- U would say what (hence the jokey What what- that people use when apeing the uppers)
non u would say horse riding- U would say riding ( for what other kind is there)
non u would say wealthy- U would say Rich.
non U would say pleased to meet you- U would say how d`you do

You see how the subtleties mark you out

A fogey conveys the impression that he is not only better than most people ,but he is keenly aware of the fact.

A spurtle will be found -in all fogey Big knockers it is for stirring things- like porridge- a breakfast that a fogey finds particually satisfying.

Re: Urban Fogey - Country Fogey

Good to see that Oatcakes get a mention in the article too.

The Fogey sock usually has a threadbare heel.

Red wine is more Fogey than White.

The Fogey Garden is either informally neat or Country cottage messy. It is never municipal park tidy (Tulips in rows) or suburban status conscious anxious (Palm trees, etc).
Fogey front gardens are minimalist - Just lawn, shrubs and a few plants here and there. The back garden is the place that Fogeys use.
Fogeys like ferns.
