Another garment with a slightly dubious image in the UK. Interesting article aside from the fact that author doesn't know the difference between a covert coat and a polo coat.

I like the point that one commentator makes..tight in the waist, loose fitting everywhere else...he needs to switch to a low caloire pint before those stomach muscles spilt aka the beer baby

It does have a dubious image, but the way the politicos are in the UK, if Arthur Daley showed-up as a prospective member of parliament, he would get my vote!

The covert coat, the velvet collar, it's a bit geezerish innit. A country garment that somehow made it's way into the city and makes the wearer look a bit flash. We are back to that British youth cult thing as covert coats were adopted by skins as they smartened up and became suedes. They called them 'Crombies' as that company were the most popular manufacturer of the coats, but they were covert coats really and the association remains.

Wander round the City of London these days and the classic covert coat tends to be worn by insurance brokers.

As stated above, somewhat geezerish / spiv like.

Farage fits the image nicely.

So it is still worn by those in the Smoke? Interesting, I would have thought all the baggage and association with Arfur Daley, a little dodgy maybe, and 70s gangster types would have alienated much of its potential demographic.

Agreed it is a bit spivvy, as if the wearer wants to "dress like a lord" but is a car salesman, insurance or real estate agent and the like...

I dunno, seems like the UK works awfully hard to prove certain associations exist. Usually in the USA, if a garment is cheesy, no one has to prove it over and over.
