Patrick McNee.
Not Emma Peel.
R.I.P - but the bowler malarkey was over rated.
I believe Honour Blackman was also very good. But before my time.
Sad news. By all accounts a genuinely nice chap, and very much a sartorial icon of my youth.
I did have a hankering, years back, for one of those John Steed style velvet suit collars, but my tailor said he would run across the room to stop anyone from doing it in practice.
Looking back, some of those suits in the later years (with that Mike Hunt chap from the instant coffee commercials) were in slightly questionable taste, but I guess those were more carefree days!
RIP
I think I read somewhere where McNee said the bowler hat made the character, but even at the time they considered his look an anachronism and they were worried it wouldn't work. As nobody really dressed like that anymore.
I can't say I've seen anyone wearing a bowler hat for real. I do know for a fact though, that even in the late 70s and early 80s the foreman at Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead would wear bowler hats to distinguish themselves visually from the rest of the workers. Makes sense when you consider the numbers involved in ship building.
Dapper man on telly, nudist in real life...
I thought all male nudists had to have a beard and a knapsack?
