Jack,
Just a private note. Wearing a dress shirt with no tie and the t-shirt showing is something I wouldn't recommend. Here in the US nothing says suburban middleclass prat like a pair of Dockers, t-shirt showing under a dress shirt and some sort of rubbersoled moc shoe. It's part of a look. If you like the look fine, it may be different in the UK. You seem to have such good sense and taste I was surprised to see you post this, but then again it may be different in the UK.

And my answer:
A very hip look in Ivy England!
It's no part of any English tradition and has nothing but subcultural/countercultural connections.
A lot of English Ivy is about subverting US Ivy.
Ivy in England is not respectable - It's nothing to do with any kind of 'elite' look. We have our own elite look over here which is very little like Ivy. It's much more structured. Ivy is a very sloppy look compared to Savile Row when viewed by English eyes.
Interesting, eh?
David
LOL - what a dork! Though the part about your good taste cannot be argued with.
The t-shirt showing is better than hair, to my eye.
Or shaved chest cleavage.

A V-neck T-shirt would look better than a crewneck IMHO though.....
