speaking of Auchincloss, this just from Financial Times:

I've only read maybe 5 or 6 of his many, many works. I don't think he'll be remembered in the pantheon of the great, but he isn't bad, which is saying something. He also apparently has an impressive collection of French literature.

Still going strong and now there'll be a second season.
Perhaps it makes me a fogey to say so, but when I look at the following AMC link to the show
http://www.amctv.com/originals/madmen/
and I compare the photo stills from the Wrap Party at left, where the cast is as they appear in real life, and the photo stills from Episode 1 at right...
in my opinion, everyone except Peggy looks better in 1960 than 2007. Pete Campbell as real-life Vincent Kartheiser looks like he just rolled out of bed. Hamm looks not unlike the hobo his childhood character confronts in an earlier flashback episode. The excessively shiny shirts and folded out collars.
And yes, I'm not out of touch, I know that's how Hollywood looks today, and that the world doesn't look much like 1960. But I guess it's just surprising that after getting the chance to look, all except Peggy, their best in a show, they wouldn't have stepped up their own dress a notch in real life...not necessarily to anything resembling Ivy, but just better than they look!

I think the more in touch with today you are, Cooly, the more you see these things.
So not Fogey at all - Just someone with a wider frame of reference than the rest of the crowd.
What's interesting too is that in that photo the woman looks so much better dressed than all the men. And I've noticed this in "real life" as well. That, you'll see some dirtbaggy guy with a girl who's dressed pretty well.
Everyone looks better with the hair combed and dressed in costume. except for Maggie Siff and Christina Hendricks (Rachel Menken and Joan Holloway, respectively). They'd look stunning in burlap sacks and birkenstocks. Interestingly enough, looking at the party photos, I've realized that with the possible exception of the aforementioned ladies, none of the cast, though good looking, is attractive in a very hollywood way. This probably adds to their appeal both artistically and (ahem) 'otherwise.'
Are hips Trad?
Watched the final episode of this season off ITunes.
When Betty Draper opened her phone bill, I thought I caught a glimpse of something familiar.
I went back and froze the frame.
The Drapers' address is
43 Bullet Park Road
Ossining, NY
A nod to the real, and fictional, John Cheever.
Clever.

Good catch. I too downloaded it from ITunes. There' s a lot of interesting commentary about the "American Condition" if that isn't too lofty of a phrase. Especially the dialogue and the monologue on diffs btwn JFK/Nixon and Campbell/Draper. It's not too much of a stretch in one sense to see Draper as Nixonian in some sense. Though he _appears_ more JFK-like. Campbell too shares attributes of both candidates. Sartorially of interest, is the semi-wash-out in from London.
I loved this show and now I've missed many many episodes. Moved to Scotland. I watch the sneak peaks online. was Salvatore outed from the closet this season?
That television show is doing more for the reputation of advertising & marketing pros, than anything else. There is no doubt many people would like to be a cool cool "ad man" now.
TV
That ending with Peggy was nuts....my fiancee's best friend's sister had the same occurence, where she didnt even know anything was out of norm until the end when it popped out. But it explains why Peggy's been looking so large in the last few episodes.
