Help Is At Hand -

A thread to help out our Brothers elsewhere on the Net. ...

Pick a thread or a post from elsewhere and if you can add to it or help out in the discussion then do so here.

The idea is just to share what you know.

Let's make the Net better!

Purely at random:

... And I know just what Brother XCubs means...

Isn't the problem though that you are thinking in terms of 'The Trad Creed'?

What is that after all?

And where does it come from?

If you voluntarily choose to shackle yourself within that very limited conception of the American clothing style in question then what right do you have to rail against your chains?

"Trad" cannot be reconciled as it is such a flawed construct. Thinking beyond the self-imposed label of "Trad" & "being a Trad" is needed.

The first poster wants you to know that he's off somewhere special (for him). AND he's been invited too.

The second poster wants to let you know that he's been there & done that. He yawns at the first poster.

The third poster has a question. The answer is that it's called a 'Racing Strap' - A leather strap with a T-bar at one end for your buttonhole and an attachment for your fob watch on the other. If he want's to play dressy-dress-up he'll need to have the right watch for this strap - a Half-Hunter. Not a Full Hunter or a Plain Face.

Edward Green have done them with silver mounts (I have one from the Burlington Arcade- late 1990's?), but usually they are just ordinary bits of leather & steel.

Are they period dressing, are they a costume prop?

Not for me to say.

Re: Help Is At Hand -

In the first Andy thread I mention here in post #2 the discussion has now moved on to 'What is Trad?'.

And it's a very good point.

'Doctor Damage' gives the proper definition  - Japan/Flusser - You know how that story goes.

Mr. Longwing then asks if Dr. D. is saying that 'Harris' is Flusser as a puckish little jest.

But Mr. Longwing makes, instead of a neat little throw-away joke, a fantastic point that others could have picked up on -

Look at Japan, read Flusser - Why is our Trad forum so different from all that stuff?

Why is Harris's Trad (& therefore AAAT's) so unlike Flusser's & Japan's?

What is the difference?

Flusser talks about one thing, the Japanese brilliantly do what they do, but AndyTrad is different again. Same name different game. Why?

It's the kind of neat little point they should be picking up on, surely?

You can lead a horse to water...

Re: Help Is At Hand -

I do see your point...

Hunters are for riders (The case/cover protects the watch so the glass doesn't break).
Half-Hunters are for those on foot. The case/cover protects the watch but the watch is still readable at a glance. No need to open the cover.
Plain face fob watches (No case/cover) came later in a horsey context. Cheaper & not "Trad"!

Re: Help Is At Hand -

I was recently thinking of a similar thread entitled 'Myth Busters" to counteract some of the bad, wrong or inelegant advice given to people without the proper questions being asked. Maybe thet's too negative and this is a more positive direction which can include myth busting or maybe I realized that if I corrected some of the unfortunate and inaccurate opinions doled out elsewhere, I would be doing this all day every day and I would be neglecting my own people here.
