Should knit ties have a dimple and be square or pointy ended?

I recently viewed The Constant Gardener with Ralph Fiennes and I thought he looked good in those knit ties. At first I excused his wearing them because I thought he was in academia but then I realized he worked for the foreign office.

He wore them without a center dimple and my question is whether there is thought about which looks more under studied or elegant. Also, wanted to see if a square end was right for a business suit or whether the pointy ended ones were better?

I have difficulty, with some of my knitted ties, actually getting a dimple in the knot. Observation seems to bear out that the dimpled tie knot is a more American fetish, or am I wrong?

Square end, always. Fine with a business suit and chelsea boots too.

I have both. If you wear a jacket (closed) who can tell?

Square ended knit ties look to me like a really long sock hanging from the neck.

Actually, Ziegfield's avatar reminds me of them.

Rather 'anal' overall.

I've never understood the MB "dimpleomania". Reading it on the web I wondered whether there was some kind of  mass gathering of OCD sufferers. Tie the tie- sometimes there's a dimple, sometimes not. No big deal either way. Certainly not a reason to re-tie it.

l couldn't ever imagine wearing a straight end tie. They look like ties for school boys or junior trolly boys. Seems like a really boyish thing to wear.

Straight ties = leave a poor impression (amateurs), looks wierd.

Always a pointy end for The Shooman.

Re: Should knit ties have a dimple and be square or pointy ended?

Rarely do you see a knitted Rooster tie with a pointed end. I have a couple of knitted ties with pointed ends and I think that they have too much detail.

Pointed ends are very easy to achieve with silk ties. Knitted ties were originally.....knitted and nothing really gained by finishing with a point execept more work.

Straight cut is more natural and goes back to the Ivy League functionality that Russell referenced recently. Knitted tie with pointed ends, a bit like a Shaker box with side handles. I guess you will find them somewhere, but we are straying away from authenticity.

A silk tie with a straight end, not for me, although Rooster have made them in the past, and I do own a couple that are never worn.

IMO knitted ties are the bridge between an informal OC and a formal shirt/silk tie combo. I personally only wear knitted ties with an odd jacket.

The dimple is difficult to achieve with some knitted ties and I have been told from a very reliable source that you will not go to hell if the dimple is ommited. The knitted tie is also probably one of the few ties that looks fine, loose with the top button of the shirt undone.
