The Sportcoat/Sweater Look
Cool weather is coming, and that means it's time for one of my favorite things; a nice sweater under a tweed jacket. One of my personal favorites is a hefty black turtleneck under a gray Harris tweed.
How does the cognoscienti on this board feel about this look? Do you like a turtle neck? A v-neck with a tie? A crew neck with a button-down?
What trousers do you like? Flannels? Cords? Jeans?
And, not to leave Shooey out, what shoos complete this look? Boots, perhaps? Loafers?

I don't like turtlenecks, roll necks and the like.
Personally I'd wear a v-neck in one of those autumnal colours. Burnt orange is a fav. If I'm wearing a gun-club I may pick-up on one of the colours in the check...
Shirts, typically buttondowns in whatever takes my fancy.
Jeans, cords and flannels can be worn. Jeans and cords if staying outside, flannels if going for a meal and don't have to wear a suit.
Shoewise, I have several pairs of chelsea boots with brogue detailing. if tramping around gardens and the like, a pair of timberlands.

I forget the last time I saw a turtleneck in action....a long time ago.
I do like a sports jacket with a v-neck jumper, but it needs to be coldish for me to need the need of a jumper.
Also on a flannel mission at present, but I am waiting for the King's tailor here in the Hague to get their RTW range in for the season the end of the month.

I've never taken to roll neck sweaters, I find them uncomfortable and irritating to wear. There's something about the image of them I don't care for, they put me in mind of the sort of men that drive Audis. That Putin feeling.....look at me .....I'm middle aged but I'm still really dynamic.

/\ this is why tweed jackets should be cut loosely, to accommodate sweaters .... Shetlands under sport coats look classic but some can be a little bunchy, Shaggy Dogs especially
a Shetland crewneck over an ocbd also looks good under an anorak, or a peacoat, duffel coat, tweed topcoat, cotton poplin flyfront raincoat, etc.
Shetland crew over ocbd, can't get more classic whether you take the high road with proper flannels, cords, khakis, or worsteds or the low road with jeans and five-pocket pants ....
yes to Viyella or Brooksflannel shirts or long-sleeved Merino or cotton polo shirts under tweed sport coats ... with a thick t-shirt, a flannel shirt can be more comfortable under a sport coat than a sweater ... depending of course on the roominess of the coat and the volume of the shirt and/or sweater
lambswool v-necks are great to me, are comfortable with coats, look great with OCBD, with or without tie, a v-neck plus a tweed or a blazer is a cornerstone ...
I've never worn a turtleneck but I have worn mock-turtle collars on on really cold days and in the mountains

Nice thread, crew neck for casual, v neck for smarter casual or work under a sport coat. I love thismlook with a tattersal button down shirt.
Worn with cords, thicker chinos, flannels. Barker Nairn, Loake commando sole shoes, heavier brogues, zug Derby shoes etc.
One thing, no ties under a crew neck, it just looks odd.

A chunky roll neck under a peacoat, cords, scotch grain brogue boots. I'm fond of a Smedley polo neck over a BD shirt with a sports coat. Flannels are a staple. Sleeveless cardi's under the sports as well, even more so with a "V" hem. I'd love to get me a couple of half zips. And some gunclub ties.

I got some nep-fleck wool square end ties from Viyella last year in plum and navy that look great with a tattersall BD and merino or lambswool v-neck.
Never thought of Smedley's that way - intriguing! I really ought to go to their mill sales, they aren't that far from us.

I'm just going to add another vote and say don't do the turtleneck. I know, coming from Grandpa this may sound surprising, but I've always loathed the turtleneck. Worn under a jacket I think you'll just be squarely in weird Professor of Fine Arts territory.

love moleskin, Barbour's old otter moleskin made in England was excellent ....
lambswool v-necks are my faves, but I currently only have them in various shades of gray, blue, blue-green, beige, and brown, and some heather versions of those ... I used to have one in burgundy too but I outgrew it ....
but: I have just noticed that my fave supplier of Scottish lambswool v-necks has finally restocked a color I've been after for a couple of years ....
... it's 91°F right now, I've got a bunch of wool sweaters, it will never be cold again, why am I trying to buy a wool sweater .....

I wear a sweater every day from October to April. The great majority of my sweaters are crew necks. Second would be cardigans. Sleeveless, with or without buttons third. I'm sure I have a v-neck sweater somewhere, but I probably have not worn one for years.
I think v-necks look better on bigger guys. They also are so very European to me. I'm an American peasant. I don't feel right with a plunging, open neckline. I suppose if I were going to wear a tie with them, but then if I'm wearing a tie I'm wearing a jacket, and then I like a sleeveless better.
I actually like the look of a turtleneck, but I don't have any. It is a dated look. But a good one---if you are Jack Cassidy suavely committing murders on Columbo. Society will not let you get away with it. A turtleneck that is. If you have enough money, you can get away with murder.

I had no idea the look was so reviled. My wife said I looked like a geometry teacher, and I took that to be a positive statement.
Now I have to suavely murder her...
