There's a company website out there that might be useful.
I remember seeing them in movies, a Rock Hudson flick directed by Frankenheimer, in particular had some scenes with the jacket.
I don't remember if the Rebel Without a Cause red jacket was a Baracuta or not.
I checked out the company website but it only had about 3 lines on the history of the jacket.
The James Dean jacket is definitely NOT a baracuta...it's a McGregor "drizzler" which is similar.
You can see/buy it here: http://www.joesugars.com/Drizzler/Drizzler.htm
I don't know the complete history but they were sold under Van Heusen for quite a while in the States, and iirc those are made in Taiwan, whereas UK Baracuta's were made in UK.
Baracuta sells a modern revised G-9 that is slimfit, also called "Japanese Vintage" (or something like that) for the Japanese market, but it's a slimmer body and sleeves as you know that G-9s are cut very boxy
There's also a G-4 which doesnt have the elasticized ribbing on sleeves and body (button closure)
There's quite a few pics of jazz fellas from the late 50s wearing G9s
I had a Baracuta jacket in the mid-'60s, with plaid lining. It always seemed to wrinkle. They were quite common on the campus and generally available, either in sand or navy. Brooks made a somewhat nicer golf jacket back then, with a tattersall lining.

Steven

What is the white thing on the left pocket?

Thing is, guys used to hang around exactly like that...
They'd talk at length in just that style and only ever look up just to make eye contact for the punchline at the end of whatever it was they had to say.
Then they'd gauge your reaction just for a split second & then look away again.
London cool.
