Re: The English Look...

In a bonkers way I like some of the ties he makes, can't speak for the quality, but I can't see a problem with ink jet printing silks as long as they are colourfast. I know he claims some of his silks to be vintage, when what he actually means are that they are vintage patterns reproduced using modern methods!

I think some of his ties could work within a very plain ensemble, something like a mid to dark grey pick n' pick in a patrician 3 piece.

Yeah, I could see that wurkin...Bit o' Mr Fish vibe...groovy baby. Grey wiv added PUNCH!

Unfortunately, the rigs he wears to showcase his wares (try typing that drunk) makes him look like he escaped an explosion in an ice cream factory.

IT JUST WON'T DO....!

BAN HIM....!!!

Re: The English Look...

I think the sweet point IMO would be between someone like Beeston and a Dandy old fop like yourself FNB..

You both preach valid points... id say it comes down to self delusion...dont make excuses for what your wearing it either works or it doesnt..is it minimal and refined or is it boring? Is it a joyous riot of colour and pattern or it is wholly ridiculous?

Both can work...but the thing is making them work...

Hepcat - I am in (Northern)Italy abput 6-7 times a year. I rarely see people peacocking like you described - but often I notice the opposite, mainly the lightly quilted nylon waistcoat worn under a suit, to "de-formalize" the whole outfit. Igents notice - these waistcoats are usually RTW and also in muted colours (navy or charcoal, never black).

Re: The English Look...

I'm there about the same amount of times each year, in fact I'm there next week for a brief visit, but in Genova for a change, rather than Milan, Bergamo, Arezzo and Florence. I agree that most Italians don't dress overly flamboyantly and are looking for a bit of sprezza to make things more casual, but there's always one or two who accessorize one step too far.

I might add, I only come across these gents in hotel lobbies or at Linate airport.

Re: The English Look...

If everything was conservative your life would be lacking any novelty...the brain would quickly die a death from not being stimulated...trouble is we are now over stimulated...and a whipser stands out more than a shout...how boring was that trend though for grey/silver about ten years ago...sold under the idea it was sleek and minimal..interiors, Big knockers, phones, cars....etc...dull as dish water..especially if the form is lacking in interest.

Re: The English Look...

Well, FNB, you may not like this but....I dont know how to say it without sounding either rude or patronizing...

Lets try it this way: If I would be friends with a chap who tells me a story like the one above, I would, after dinner, when having a drink, have a chat with him. In the most polite and friendly way. If I would really care about him, I would tell him about the many people he encountered in his professional life who did NOT comment on the unusual (meant in a not-good way) dress, who kept their opinion to themselves, whose frown he most likely has overlooked. If I really liked my friend, then I would try to understand him, try to understand why attracting other people's attention by dressing that way seems to be relevant for him.
