Well, I do understand "Dandyism" but I think it is nowadays mostly applied by people who are not Dandies.

Re: The English Look...

No, Don McCullin, photojournalist of war and the urban underbelly.

Although these days, his photography is focused on the English landscape and is somewhat an heir of Constable IMCO

Re: The English Look...

The provincial English country look I see on my tours of this great isle are Corgi socks, Magee jackets, various own brand cords that look like they're just rebranded pakemans, Cheaneys & Loakes...and those geometric, inca style belts from Argentina they sell as dog collars as well...the shirts are normally Fynch Hatton and the jumpers are Alan Paine, Peter Scott or Johnstons...Gurteen always rears its ugly head

The colors are jewelled...the fabric is tattersall...the over checks on tweeds are loud...the underwear is novelty..the shoes are the best bit...the socks are striped...there's a lot of paisley cravats..

In London this is less the case...

Re: The English Look...

Has anyone else noticed how everywhere has to look like some interpretation of how the Great British Bakeoff looks?

Excellent! I actually like the Keiser Report, not sure his missus contributes much to the show.

^ I sometimes wonder if Max has been at the recreational drugs on a few of his shows.

Re: The English Look...

Does it float? McCullin doesn't float, he rocks!

He is the man who can, a man who has been over the edge of what we can understand into realms we cannot even contemplate and he came back and retained his sanity and revealed the horror of war and gone onto other great things in the artform of his choosing. Check out his photos Bop, he has earned the way he looks, he is the English sangfroid personified as a man who is 80 now.

Dude, if I am still alive then, if I look half as good as McCullin I will be a very happy chappy.

Re: The English Look...

But what's all that got to do with clothes...? Its like talking about him on a bakery forum.. this guy is crap at baking...but its ok he had an exciting life..?

This is exactly how post-modernism started!

If you're making an arguement for clothes not being essential to someone being interesting then I completely agree. But then I dont think just because some is interesting it doesn't mean their clothes can be warranted as ok because of it.

Re: The English Look...

Bop, I am making an argument for a design for living, not as per Noel Cowards play, but it is demonstrated that the style can embody the man. The sartorial style can tell us everything we need to know about the person, with some exceptions of course.

Re: The English Look...

Again that's the issue... all of that doesn't equate to an outfit looking good...just in the same way an outfit that looks good doesnt equate to an interesting person.

Re: The English Look...

An outfit that doesn't look good, is like a crap library or music collection, it's a good indicator that the person is not interesting and I will disengage myself quick.
