Happy New Year !
My preferred branch of the 70s soul 'family tree' tends towards the Curtis Mayfield/Isaac Hayes end of things.
Also the Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye stuff.
Happy New Year. You might want to check out The O'Jays (the Back Stabbers and Ship Ahoy albums are amongst my favourites).
Al Green's 1970s albums for Hi are terrific, part of the soul canon. Everybody Loves the Sunshine by Roy Ayers Ubiquity veers towards jazz funk but also has a bright soul edge. And it's a while after their Motown heyday, but Main Street People by The Four Tops is well worth checking out.
Compilations are a slippery slope, but you can't go wrong with anthologies of the Chairmen of the Board, the Chi-lites and the O'Jays, though you might be better following Chet's tips and go for the albums he metions.
And Acton says, the 1970s output by Marvin, Stevie, Isaac and (especially) Curtis is essential - along with Al Green, they form the bedrock of any 1970s soul album collection IMO.

Checking that Senor Coconut CD, it states on the inner ring "Indigo CD", so it may well be a non-red book hybrid. Ultimately, these techniques are rear guard actions, the developers will always find a way around them in the next version of their drive or ripper. Remember those allegedly protected CD's from the early to mid-2000's?
Fear of copying music has been with us since the cassette days, but back then pop music had a central place in our common culture, now it means nought and so you may be less inclined to buy the latest music when you can get it for free.
