I've found you can darken colour if you use a cream. Seems to have stayed darker on a pair I have. After using the cream a couple of times I now just use a polish. Of course you might want to try it on an old pair first but it worked for me Beester.

Correct, but that's also true for every Alt Wien shoes I've ever seen. For me grained leathers need a rather blobby last, otherweise you're better off with a hatch or pin grain leather, which I find better suited to elegant lasts.

I think the problem is the tan itself. It lacks the rich antique patina you get with deeper and darker browns.
