The Athens of America

Or the Hub. Boston, Mass.

I lived there from 1984-89. I had a good time.

Re: The Athens of America

The Dropkick Murphys! I bought a few of their CD's in one go, a sad attempt to blend gangsta' rap with the punk Irish sensibility of The Pogues. In fact, over the years I've bought quite a few of these Pogues spin-offs and wannabees albums and none of them, none of them come close to MacGowan and the lads in their prime.

I've only been to Boston once, I liked it, especially the English accents.

Yes, more than two, but they were on offer, at least all but the newest one. What can I say, shite!

Re: The Athens of America

I'm still looking for the Gangster Rap?

Anyway, the Pogues are ok, I quite like some of their stuff, but Dropkick Murphys are probably a top five all time live band and completely different style. They are a straight up punk band who happens to have Irish instrumentation sometime, not an Irish bring everyone on stage plus the Giant vibrator sink band who also just happen to have a little punk sensibility ala the Pogues. Flogging Molly is much, much closer to the Pogues in terms of style, they have some good stuff too.

Hank Williams III is not bad. He ain't his granddaddy though, I can tell you that. Never be another Hank.

Stan, we maybe overlapped in Boston? I lived in Allston, right where Brighton Ave splits off from Comm Ave, and I worked in the BU Bookstore and then downtown as a messenger. Also lived in Watertown for a bit. 1984-89, roughly. Hung out at Play It Again Sam's, Great Scott, Silhouette Lounge, Johnny D's, The Pour House, and of course Fenway Park.

Re: The Athens of America

Pogues are a 'chicken in the basket' act now, recycling their back catalogue. I saw them a couple of times for their annual Brixton Christmas concerts but could not face another year of the same old, same old.

Bible Code Sundays are a decent act in that genre and at least they know the local circuit.

However, I think I prefer Big Tom and Philomena. Cricklewood always had a showband in one hall and a ceili band in the other.

Re: The Athens of America

I've a soft spot for Boston, or more precisely Cambridge. My late father worked there one semester a year for nearly two decades, which meant I went to middle school there in the late 70s and then worked summers there in the mid-1980s. The whole experience really shaped my life, in terms of music, clothes and sensibility.

On a not unrelated matter, I think Shane MacGowan was something of a genius as a songwriter, albeit for only a short time. I saw the Pogues many times, but one of the most memorable shows I saw by them was in Providence in 1986. Actually, it's probably the least memorable, as excess of alcohol meant the gig is something a blur to me now...

Re: The Athens of America

I saw a triple bill at Wolf Trap in northern Virginia, early 90s maybe: Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper, the Pogues, and the Violent Femmes.

The whole gang came out at the end to do Mojo's version of "This Land Is Your Land," which MacGowan enlivened by doing a face plant. And it was no parlor trick. He went down and stayed down.

I was a little overserved myself.

Re: The Athens of America

MacGowan is no advertisement for alcohol, that's for sure. It's pretty sad, though it's also something of a miracle he's still alive, particularly when other more abstemious Pogues, such as Phil Chevron, have passed on.

That was a good lineup for a show, btw

There's a couple of bootlegs of Talking Heads from the Fear of Music tour and earlier that were recorded in Boston too. One was recorded at the Berklee Arts Centre. Great stuff.

Re: The Athens of America

Problem with some of the Pogues' stuff is on the most successful  songs are played so straight and its like someone has come along and cut the band's balls off. I suppose it had to be tempered for mass consumption.

Peace and Love is them at their best imo

Re: The Athens of America

I think thats why I like Peace and Love because you get the right balance its cleaned up but the emotion is still in it.Cotton Fields and White City being good examples.
