Re: Andyland "Trads" as Non-Sussed Skinheads...

Kevin Rowland to Paul Gorman in 2003 - Sleevenotes to 'Let's Make This Precious'.

(And I should make clear that my interest in KR is purely as a stylist, same with Paul Weller - Their music isn't my taste.)

"Then in January 1983 I was walking down Madison Avenue dressed in a heavy overcoat with my beret with a feather sticking out of it. I stopped outside Brooks Brothers and saw the clothes we had worn years ago, before the media ruined it and started the skinhead thing: raised stitching on the seams, hook or off-center vents in the jackets, patch pockets. The jackets were so subtle it was untrue, because at first glance they looked very square.

... I'm still amazed by the fact that the coolest London suburban kids in the late 60's were wearing the clothes of middle-aged, conservative America, deliberately flying against everything we were led to believe the 1960's were supposed to be about. Subversive or what?"
