As a rank commoner, I know not whether elites wore Ivy.  I do know that the USA's "Best and Brightest" wore Ivy.  We wanted to look like them.

I think some of this has been examined on the "Boom Years" thread.
The official Ivy League Look of 55-65 was a mass style.
And probably mostly a marketed fashion style.
