Worst Fashion Decade?

This post made the point that the '70s were the worst decade for men's clothing:

http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showpost.php?p=659781&postcount=12

I disagree; I think the '90s were the worst--entirely undistinguished by anything remotely interesting or even distinctive; at least the '70s had a certain rambunctious personality to go along with it whereas in the '90s, it was either ugly low-gorge nailhead suits with those hideous ties which you still see people working government jobs wear, and grunge.

I don't know what's worse--grunge or low-gorge nailhead suits.

I didn't think of the 1990s as worse, but I agree that the 1970s have been unnecessarily pilloried.

Re: Worst Fashion Decade?

80's was the worst time. Everything looked cheap and shitty. Big ugly hair on women, mullets on blokes, huge padded shoulders on everything, the beginning of multi coloured chunky sole sneakers, board shorts, extra colourful tasteless clothes. lt was a great time for music but a horrible time for fashion.

70's was a good time for fashion. l liked the skin tight shirts, the cowboy boots, the western shirts, the bell bottom pants and the platform heals of the day. Disco was in and the clothes were fun at the time: definately smarter than the 80's.

l remember my mum buying me $4.00 sneakers in the early 70's. These sneakers had a plastic sole, had insoles which ripped out within 3 weeks, and the soles come apart after 2 or 3 months. When the insole ripped out, my poor heals would get all these perforations on them from the plastic mould of the sneaker. That bad experience made me hate sneakers forever and l went to wearing shoos full time at age 10 (l even did school sport in shoos). That bad experience also made me vow to always get high quality leather sole shoos as soon as my feet stopped growing.

My style as a kid was: cowboy western shirt (never wore anything else), dress shoos/cowboy boots, trousers (never jeans ever), handmade jumper. l was always a nerd boy. l always dressed different from the other kids. All my sisters friends always chased me around the streets because they always wanted to kiss me for some reason, but l always run away. wink

l remember one mate l had. He'd wag school, get in his brothers car (at 13), drive down to the beach with various chicks, shag them and go surfing for the day. He'd then drive home before his older brother got home  from Uni so he wouldn't get caught. He did it dozens of times.

Oh no, Shooey, some really good style came out of the 1980s.
At least with high-end men's wear (not parachute pants, or leg warmers, etc.).

Re: Worst Fashion Decade?

Actually, unlike a lot internet gentlemen, I don't feel the current decade is the worst in terms of sartorialism. Whilst there are huge amounts of badly dressed people in cheap and sloppy clothing, there is still choice as to higher-end wares: designer, tailored RTW; MTM; bespoke--it's all available, at an inevitable price, of course.

The '70s had dodgy taste to be sure, but it had a certain fabulousness about it. When I look at pictures of '70s New York, the sight of people dressed in flash in contrast to the condition the city was in, there's the idea that they doing their best to alleviate themselves out of that hell.

Today, people revel in that hell.

Re: Worst Fashion Decade?

well i listed the 40s mainly because of the War, and all it did to kill off the classic ranges of dress that came before. some of them were fading, but i think would have still carried on more than they did if the war didnt stop a lot of it cold, and of course the mass conformity of the 50s subsequent to everyone having been in the military.
