Leather of Filson vs. Swaine
Chums,
how do you all reckon the leathers compare on the Filson small goods vs. those from SAB?
I've had a few Filson items. Leather very durable, seems very quality but the SAB stuff (the ol' rebranded by Brooks
I assume) as well as some ol' knick-knacks and whatnot, seemed to have that certain je ne sais quoi.
What say you on the substantial diff's?
I might be getting a family member a gift and what the hell, might as well spend over twice as much for the Brigg if you all think it's worth it -- since these types of gifts last a long time, and end up being only pennies (or at least dollars) a year difference...

I'd go Brigg or Pickett.
Can you get 'Liberty's' stuff online?
Not sure... Their small leather goods used to be very good & well priced.

Don't know about ol' Liberty. I like Filson but it's a bit stiff and whatnot. Still I think the quality's there but not as luxe as ol' Swaine, for sure. Perhaps a different beast altogether.

I'd go with Brigg but only in the London tan bridle. I think that's what Swaine (including its Peal incarnation) has always benn about. My brother discussed the provenance of Peal with an elderly Brooks salesman, who said it came from Swaine. But I read on the other forums that Papworth (which is a subsidiary that does not use a lot of handwork) now makes Peal. If you want something less recognizable and less prone to stain, Smythson makes an excellent wallet. More expensive than Swaine.
