Upside Down: The Creation Records Story

Watched most of this on Netflix last night.  Pretty interesting for those into the Creation Records bands: Ride, Jesus and Mary Chain, Swervedriver, My Bloody Valentine, House of Love, etc.  Thankfully, I fell asleep before the Oasis part.

Almost as bad as having a Lemonhead.

Sadly the other day I passed two buskers doing "Wonderwall".
I gave $5.
Sad to see people become so desperate.

The Jesus and Mary Chain, good band. I remember buying Psychocandy when it came out...

The great Bobby Gillespie was part of personnel on that album, later he went on to form Primal Scream who released Screamadelica. A seminal album.

I don't own any albums by Oasis, agreed with the late Malcolm McLaren's assessment. Nth rate Beatles clones, and McLaren knew phony when he saw one.

Re: Upside Down: The Creation Records Story

A mate of mine had a band called Made for Jane, as in Jane Fonda, in the early 90s. When I went to see them, I thought these guys and lass are going nowhere. In any event, my mate informed me what happened to them all, a couple of years later: the girl singer had gone on to be a solicitor, one was composing film music in L.A. and the guitarist had gone on to to get a large advance from Creation Records, to the tune of 150 grand, which he wasted on drugs and ended up with nothing, back in his parents box room.

^ that story sounds very familiar 4F, Creation were throwing money about following the success of Oasis.
I had friends that were given a 40 grand demo/development deal and the label 'forgot' about them, after about 6 months they delivered an albums worth of demos to the label and then got given another large chunk of money to 'try again' with a different producer.
Nothing ever came of the deal, but all the band got some lovely instruments and equipment out of it.

As a bit of a crossover with the A vs D thread.

Leave Them All Behind by Ride is the early 70s Townshend/Who playbook writ large,
has all the ingredients (a sequencer pattern start, chugging melodic bassline, 'push and pull' drumming and even drops to a solo acoustic rhythm guitar part later in the track) but then shows it's age with a drenched in fx early 90s guitar sound.

Re: Upside Down: The Creation Records Story

I know the chap who produced this, used to do little bits of work for him.

Best thing I worked on was a benefit gig for Scott Piering which took place at the Scala in London's Kings Cross.

Jesus and Mary Chain still sound great, was never into My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream have always been pretty solid. Lot of great music.

I adore Loveless and Isn't Anything. I haven't heard the recent one but I was also put off by the outrageous vinyl retail price.
