^ from my alma mater! Not the workshop itself, however, although, as a frosh, I had naïve ambitions to gain acceptance there some day, thinking if I became an English major, they'd only gladly take me. I gave that idea up when it became obvious, with the help of some parental pressure, that I'd need to make a living after I graduated.
During my school years, there was a great sandwich shop called Bushnell's Turtle where students and faculty from the U ate, and the townies as well. I remember sitting there eating lunch on more than one occasion and looking up to see a famous writer sitting at another table. I saw Kurt Vonnegut shooting the breeze over coffee with a bunch of groupie students, mainly girls. Also saw John Cheever poring over a lovely co-ed's (of course) short story with her. I could only stare in awe. They were like rock stars to me.
