I posted this question on another thread, but in all likelyhood it got lost. For those who have better knowledge, what is the difference between the LLBean Bean Boot and the Maine Hunting Shoe? They appear to be the same thing, but have different prices and of course are listed separately.
I emailed Bean, and recieved a response that they are made of different leather, darker, and had a different sole. The bean boot comes in brown/brown and tan/brown, so the different color statement makes no sense. Maybe they dont know their product? I am thinking about ordering another pair, with foul weather upon us, and am debating on the thinsulate and/or goretex model. Any ideas? Thanks.
Our chum Speas answered you over on the Ugly thread (Just in case you missed it)
Cheers!
links? didn't know about the Bean boot. Only Maine Hunting Shoe.
Not sure why, but Bean reintroduced the MHS in their hunting catalog a few years back. They generally dont show it in their regular catalog. Perhaps old timers complained about the change to the rubber on the boot. You can only get the high boots in the MHS. I also noticed that the leather seemed nicer and more comfortable on the MHS than my recent vintage Bean boots but didnt think it was intentional - evidently it might be:
"The original Maine Hunting Shoe was Leon Leonwood Bean's first product, introduced in 1912. Over the years, we've made lots of improvements to these boots, but hunters have told us that they miss the moccasin-like feel that our original boots had in the woods. So we set out to bring it back. The new Maine Hunting Shoe has an improved bottom that is softer and more flexible, allowing the hunter to better feel the forest floor. The new sole grips better and lasts longer, too, for many seasons of reliable performance. We've also added a steel shank in the arch for extra lateral support in rough terrain. We improved the upper with a premium waterproof leather that's softer and more supple, so it molds to your leg for a custom fit. Just as they were in 1912, they're backed by our founder's legendary 100% satisfaction guarantee. Each pair is still handstitched and checked for quality right here in Maine."
I thought Bean Boot was a colloquial term for the MHS. I just recall the MHS in the two colors. I think women could have a dark blue as well. (For the rubber part).
MHS in various sizes (height o' the shoe). And then in an actual "shoe" that was a lace-up.
The tradly version was the slip-on, which was good if you had to walk through the city to work in snow/slush. You could always keep a pair of Alden tassels at your office for those days.
I don't remember the actual Bean Boot, but I could be wrong. I bought the 8" tan MHS years ago.
I'm surprised they can offer a quality boot for $85 dollars. Something's gotta give on quality, I'd think.
