An interesting chap I was talking to at the weekend advised matching one's outfit to one's accessories, not the other way round.
Start with a tie or a pair of cufflinks & move on from there.
I thought it was quite a nice refreshing take on getting dressed in the morning.
Anybody else do this?

You could start with the colour(s) of your silk knots?
I think the idea is that if you think things through backwards you can discover unexpected combinations that work.

Do you think you would have arrived at that same outfit if you had planned it the other way 'round (Started with jacket & trou. & added on from there)?
The method seems like a nice way to mix things up.

'Outfit' is one of my father's words I now realise. Very dated, eh? "Gent's Outfitters"...
T&A have wonderful archives of their shirts & ties of the past - There was a booklet from them out at the end of the 90's about the history of the building their shop now occupies - It was originally Gentlemen's Chambers, doncha know - And it had fantastic photos of the old pattern books.

If I am not going to wear a suit, I usually start with the slacks, followed by shirt, then tie, and finally a jacket that I think will go with with those.

jesmond, I understand your enthusiasm for T&A. My most memorable connection with T&A relates to my father, a great admirer of T&A, though disinclined to splurge on a T&A shirt. So, you can imagine his elation to have received a T&A shirt from me as a going-away gift when he and my mother took a much-anticipated trip on the QE2. Wearing that T&A shirt, appropriately enough aboard the QE2, was one of the highpoints of the trip, and wearing it afterwards has given him much pleasure.

Marc, if your father too was really enthusiastic about T&A, and you were indeed the first person to buy him that T&A shirt that he`d always hankered after ,and futhermore it was just as he was on the point of embarking on a trip on the QE2 ....(!)
Well yeah, i think that would have to be very special indeed...A beautiful and very touching gesture on your part.

Speaking of starting points, I was discussing, by the fire, with my ol' chum, whilst drinking wine-in-the-box, the idea of banishing most accessories from the wardrobe that are of your basic colors, and instead replacing them with bright colors. Bright socks, bright ribbon belts, watch straps, etc. My chum found that switch from say, grey and black socks, to yellow and pink socks no matter what he wore, gave that much desired ol' chum look. He decided there and then, in allegiance to pink and green, to start with those primary colors. A more youthful, vigorous, preppy look, indeed, ol' chums. I strongly encourage you to invest yourselves accordingly.
