I think you might be being slightly over demanding on the quality and depth needed to write a puff piece of journalism, I get the feeling the survey was really just a bit of a laugh... it could be pulled apart but really its probably not that far off beat... tracksuits, great on an 80s bboy less so me, red trousers, ok on people whose lives demand the wearing of them, speedos...deeply unsociable swimming attire...these cultural dictations are what bind us, I wonder if it got a bit lost in translation but I think in the UK we have a bit of a laugh with this stuff.
