Just got an authentic 60s (maybe late 50s) Ivy sack. Very dark grey material, no sheen, welted (laped, raised-edge, etc) lapels and seams, hooked side vents, no shoulder padding, 3/2. not so much as the tiniest stain or mothhole.
However the trousers are a bit full for my taste. the outer seam is lapped, i.e it looks identical to the back seam. Does the effect alterations? I'm planning on having the legs tapered and taken in in the thigh.
PS if anyone is interested I could post photos of the thing. It's not a marvel of sartorial resplendence, just a fun, inexpensive suit to kick around in.
Photos would be very welcome, if possible.
I'll dig up the camera and see what I can do. Also, I meant to say hooked CENTER vent. Hooked SIDE vents would make this seem more rare.
Sorry to all those excited by the prospect of seeing hooked side vents.
Please post your, rise measurement in my, appropriate thread.
I'm thrilled to see photos of that suit.
It looks amazing, and you are very lucky to be the owner.
Note the padded shoulders and narrow trouser cuffs.
Note the low stance of the hip pockets, and the rear vent.
Yeah, that lapel's the shit. What's the measurement? I just had a jacket MTM with 'umble lapels, but maybe not quite that much, because I lacked the courage.
Coolidge, what do you think of this suit?
You have some vintage ones, from your father.
How do they compare?
nic suit! Looks like the 60s suits I've had over the years
My problem was something similar to yours. The jacket may have fit perfect, but the trousers were always an issue. Even if the waist was good there was always a fullness in the hips and down the leg that I never liked...even with alterations that got it much better the hip area would always be a bit too blousy for my taste.
still you should be able to get it tailored down without any problem.
how's scotland treating you?

Lapped seams are also a nice mark of added care and workmanship that went into the trousers. Very old-world touch you don't see often these days, certainly not on ready made trousers. Enjoy!
Certainly less formal - And that's why its appearance on American formal & semi-formal suits is so wonderful to the Anglo eye.
- Like a ticket pocket on a town suit.
- Or a pair of snuff brown suede Oxford brogues in town...
It opens the windows and lets in some much needed fresh air!

I have a vintage sharkskin suit that was custom made in 1967. It's more of a mod suit than an Ivy one, but even the seam going down the back of each sleeve is lapped. Haven't seen a detail like that anywhere.
