Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Very interesting Sears men's catalog from 1970 of their 'traditional' kings road label, which included natural shoulder options.  One of these suits, a three piece vested, is also on eBay now. It would be interesting to know if they had decent fabric contents in other materials; probably not. I recently picked up a Sears shetland from the era with no origin label (very likely USA, given the time) but it is damn close to McGeorge, perhaps slightly lighter and not as tightly knit but almost more comfortable.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

They're mostly tiny sizes though right - assuming a 14 here means a 14 collar ?

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

^these are exactly the sort of thing that the j. simons crowd go nuts over that i really don't get. my first impression upon going into the covent garden store was, my god, they really like a lot of shoes especially that are definitely into the american bland modern eddie bauer sphere. obviously you should wear whatever the hell you like but the 90s/00s dexter / rockport / much of bass stuff holds no appeal for me.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

^i haven't worn paraboots but i don't like heavy, clunky soles for the most part.

^my larger point is that simons had blended in a lot of sort of general bland american menswear worn by middle age american men everywhere that in the US would not have been sold in an ivy shop.  in new haven, the shoes at barrie's were about sanders or grenson level quality but they were mostly, as i recall, english, with a few american styles mixed in, all private label.  it was surprising to me that lower grade, not really ivy american shoes would have more cache in an english ivy context than more easily accessible english shoes. but obviously they were less distinct. i myself cannot imagine living within shot of northampton and not buying northampton shoes for the same price or less as american lower end shoes.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Bass is, uh, pretty Ivy... Whether Sportocasins are themselves "Ivy" can be debated (preferably over at Ask Andy, because those debates are boring), but it doesn't take superhuman powers of the imagination to see how a Bass shoe would end up on the radar of those attracted to the style, especially if they're also mixing in other influences, as British Ivy enthusiasts are, the same as those who go for rugged Ivy or whatever. It's all postmodern - the days of un-self-conscious, un-influenced Ivy are over. One can still be that person, if one grew up in it and is most likely over the age of 60, but otherwise you're mixing different things together.

Fetishization of generic "American" wear is another question, obviously. I'm not British, don't shop at John Simons, can't speak to any of that.
