Nonchalant; How to do it.

Coolly unconcerned, indifferent, or unexcited; casual:

Looking at Drakes lookbook for this season I became excited about being Nonchalant. Its a word that gets thrown around a lot at clothes geeks. Ultimately over the last few years its meant men wearing a crappy bracelet or 10 and other such like nonsense...strapes undone on monks, no socks with a suit spring to mind. Which I've found duff first and then boring.

This lookbook has taken all the elements of Ivy easyness, Italian cool and British middle class eccentricity I like and blended it perfectly.

Apart from that orange fleece, not sure what thats about.

I agree - Drake's have really hit the spot. Apart from the fleece of course...

I think for you to have nonchalance, you have to have a separate, definitive authority that you're breaking away from. Thus, if you dont have a mainstream, buttoned up dressing culture, how can you have nonchalance. I say this because it could be that nonchalance is a passe term. When jacket and tie is no longer a requirement to prove value, competence, morals and other credentials, what need is there to stick it to the man?

Hmmm, you may well be right. My interest in clothes stems from my days as a mod. Its a title I'm happy to drop and I don't think its a good look on a man my age but I guess I'm still a bit hung up on the strictness of a set of excessive rules for being well dressed within that tribe. I suppose thats why sloppyness (to a degree) appeals to me. I've kinda gone my own way within a subculture until I no longer belong within it. Yet I still like the idea of the mod ethos, just wish it was a bit more with it and less stuffy, or mod mod if you like. I don't think nonchalant and mod are two words that go together.

Re: Nonchalant; How to do it.

We've never really seen a period where clothing fashions were changing so rapidly. I think part of it is "disposable fashion" but there are many reasons. Disposable fashion for men makes it hard to stand out from the crowd because clothing costs are so low now that anyone can try or experiment with a wild/vivid jacket and get rid of it fairly quickly. Makes it hard for dandies to keep up with the Jones'...or rather, keep the Jones' from keeping up with the dandies.

I also think, you know, anyone can be an "expert" now - anyone with a few Instagram followers can call themselves a #menswear expert. So there's less distinction between the guy who knows and the guy who "knows"... The lines are blurred about what is actually going on, what's hype, and what's pose...
