I wouldn't go quite that far, Coolidge. The only hat I own is a Christy's Foldaway with a moderately sized-brim. Gets worn during inclement weather. The sleek look isn't for me (head's not shaped right), but it is for Bama Mike.

That's a swell-looking hat. I hadn't looked at the Lock Sandown closely. I still sort of like the Lock Madison in the light grey. But I think a brown hat goes with everything. Grey suit. Blue Suit. Tweeds, etc.
Yeah, I like both as well. I prefer the thin ribbon because it gives a slightly more casual, more crumpled look overall (not a very good description, but oh well), which can be an asset with something like a hat that can give off a slightly formal air. A man could do much worse than having the two of them and no other hats.
I may be hanged for this, but for my more formal suits, I wear a derby or bowler hat, which I think adds a special smartness. In actuality, the hat does not look costumey as a fedora which, like it or hate it, inevitably has a gangster-ish connotation these days.
For more casual winters, I have a Basque beret; and for extreme weather, a Russian fur hat. I realize all these hats sound slightly outrageous on their own, but in wearing, they really aren't. It rather depends on what type of clothing one tends to wear.

Is brown tonier because it is associated with the country and the wearer in town is presumably of the landed sort and can defy the rules of the rat-race urbanites or, short of actual defiance which is not very English, simply be unaware of their existence?
