And neither Adler or Britches of Georgetown exists today.
The joke is that many items are priced to be sold on sale. Best examples are the $160 viyella shirts at J. Press, which after the 25% discount, come down to $120. Apparently now Press does a post-Christmas super-sale so that one may actually be able get the viyella at a true discount. I think most of their outerwear is priced this way also.
viyella shirts:
oconnells:$120
andover: $105
j press: $160 - for a little while
I wonder if there are any special fabrics that Press is using? Or certain manufacturing requirements that elevate the price? If not, that is a disparity indeed.
And an interesting point you make about high prices which are only marginally normal at sale time.
Viyella is not what it used to be. Orvis and the Darien Sports shop offer some deals. I don't think anyone sells the real stuff today. I remember Press sales back to the early 70s. they joined the mass marketers only in the last year or so. Their pricing was quaint, but probably not profitable in the USA. Apparently they had an enormous wearhouse housing the large inventory they couldn't sell at 25% off. not no more.
