RIP David James Frost Mellor

Three cheers to David James Frost Mellor aka Russell Street/ Terry Lean/ Miles Away/ Chiltern Street/ Just Jim and many other nicknames I cannot remember.

He might not have invented >>Ivy on the net<<  or ‘trolled the Trad Forum’  as much as he liked to think but we owe a lot to him.

The quote function does not seem to work yet, so let me quote one of his answers on the wardrobe to Brownshoe:

“ Sorry I missed all this yesterday - I was at J. Simons buying a tie & having an all too quick chat with the great man re: The old Brooks & the old Haspel (I'll post on it later).

I think in a nutshell what we all like is the American Traditional Natural Shoulder Ivy League style (TNSIL) - if we like these clothes at all.
Because we like these clothes we call them by their proper and historically correct name: The Ivy League Style. This is the name that you will find the style called by in pre '04 writings on the subject. It is the name that everybody understands.

"Trad" is an internet lifestyle game. An update on the "Preppy" lifestyle spoof.

If we are serious about this style we should be concentrating on it seriously in my book and not playing "Curriculums" and all those other games which have no basis in reality.

I'd like the impact & influence of the Classic American Ivy style appreciated and discussed properly on the Net. in all it's aspects - even including the Brooks natural shouldered double-breasted style.

"Trad" can be played out elsewhere as a game for lightweights, spoofsters and trolls. Why not? It's all internet fun.

But nobody who is serious about this style has any place buying into it or calling Ivy League by this new made up name "Trad".

"Trad" as a game has been going on for far too long now and there are fools out there who believe that it and it's rules of dress are real. They are not. They are an ill-informed interpretation of Ivy League style only, and a very limited and limiting interpretation at that. A pale and very silly echo.

We should leave it behind and let the nebbishes play their game in their ill-fitting and garish clothes. They simply do not know what they are talking about when it comes to discussing this style and I deeply resent their assumed ownership of what classic American style is all about. It's as if a bunch of morons had latched on to Savile Row style and were playing around calling themselves "Rowers", making up silly rules as they went along.

Time to move on.

IMVHO.

David

Let’s not forget him and let’s remember him in a good way.

Yes, three cheers to Jim. He contacted me when he was putting together some kind of exhibition for J Simons. I wonder what happened to any of the stuff he managed to put together or was the whole thing a spoof?

Nah, I don’t think this was a spoof.

Not sure about the exhibition but I guess he was in touch with Jason Jules when the documentary on JS was being made.

Re: RIP David James Frost Mellor

I was very sad to hear of his death and thanks to Hank for posting this topic. He was the ultimate wind-up, rather crazed at times, and manipulative and deceitful and lots of other bad things. We will all have experiences of him. And yet he was also very intelligent,  wrote beautiful copy, had an aesthete’s eye and a deep love of the Ivy Look and John Simons’ background as somebody of deep authenticity rooted in the history of 20th century men’s clothing. He was always making deals, telling lies, setting people off against other. I think of him as the Ivy Malcolm McLaren, fearless and clever and rather disturbing, but unforgettable and original and never ever dull. I have many memories of him and think of him often. If nothing else he did us a great service by winding up the dullest, most pompous man on the internet - Mr C Chensvold! RIP Jimmy David Frost Mellor, trickster, fraud, genius.

I gave him an old polyester "Lion of Troy" half sleeve shirt I bought from the Ivy Shop in 1969, together with a famously twisted Atkinsons tie from the same place. I wonder where they went?

I was with you until the aesthete's eye bit.

And yours as well unfortunately.  Looks like the forum oldware is still flaky.  I have to use the quote function to see what ya'all are posting.

Yes. The forum software seems as odd as Kirby Allison.

There's obviously a problem where it doesn't show posts that have a quote in them.

The problem is that, as part of my ivy reenacter lifestyle, I only own a 1950s computer. It's very stylish but it's also massive and doesn't work very well.

As for the hagiography of Jim: I don't believe in speaking ill of the dead however:

on reading certain posts above I don't actually think Jim is dead,
I challenge Tworussellstreet to support any of his wild claims with evidence.

Re: RIP David James Frost Mellor

No messing.  I read of his death in a Macclesfield newspaper.  I once offered, years ago, to visit him in Bristol.  Nothing came of that or a planned meet-up in London around twelve years ago.  I used to quite enjoy chatting to him on the 'phone, but he was really in an Internet universe of his own.  By that I mean, I simply couldn't follow a lot of what he was telling me (he assumed I already knew).  He had a little girl he used to call 'Pork Pie'.  Probably about the age of my own younger daughter now.

Very very sad.

A credit controller from Macclesfield? 2 things he never mentioned. The article doesn't mention his child either so I wonder if she even exists. Regardless, I hope he had some pleasure in life.

Re: RIP David James Frost Mellor

Fact and fantasy did get rather mixed up.  But I'm sure the young lady exists.  Pretty sure anyhow.  I once offered to lend him a few quid when he seemed skint.  He politely declined and I was probably relieved that he did.  I think his widow may be an award-winning author.  Amusingly, over on another site some who used to post on here were speculating as to whether I actually existed or was simply a figment of Jimmy's feverish imagination.

Salutations, Yuca.

Re: RIP David James Frost Mellor

I liked Frosty a lot. He was smart and charming. A twat too of course. The Boris Johnson of Ivy perhaps. He has public school manners, deference and arrogance all mixed up. Did he have cancer? I was with him when he just collapsed onto the floor outside John Simons, quite literally a comedy pole-axe. Seemed to be swigging Tramadol and whisky? Or was this all just a scam? He stayed with friends of mine, tried to get off with their wives! Potter's Brimstone & Treacle springs to mind.

I can't say I liked him a lot but he certainly doesn't deserve a comparison to Boris Johnson.
