Merit And Gurteen chinos and cords

This might cause wry amusement in certain quarters (those who are in easy striking distance of that nice area around Baker Street) but those of us in the bleak northern outposts (John Smedley-land) have to do the best we can: especially when we have put a bit of weight on through eating too many Scottish breakfasts during lockdown.
Merit cords are okay at about £65-70 and are at least 100 per cent cotton.  Mine were in a very neutral shade of mid-brown.  Gurteen cords I first bought in a long-established shop in Lincolnshire (still selling Farah slacks!) and are okay for dossing about it.  Plain fronted but including man-made fibres (ugh).  Mine are in bottle green, a kind of goldish brown, navy.  The chinos are, again, 100 per cent cotton, plain fronted.  £65.
I used to go to an old-fashioned gents' outfitters in the next town: good for Alan Paine knitwear, socks and other bits and bobs if not much else.  But he swore blind he didn't stock anything made in China.  Closed down during the pandemic.  Thinking of trying Brocklehurst in Bakewell.  Choked with Barbour but some quite nice-looking shirts and sweaters.
