Just taking time off from my academic reading on the evolution of working class housing in British cities to peruse a rather iffy book on the rare soul scene. Eye-popping stuff - and eye-watering prices on Ebay for certain records: about the price of the couple of nights I had in Pisa a few years ago.
I was eyeing a very spiffy overcoat the week before last: a cool £950. But when, where and how often would I wear it? A chap in a clothes shop of whom I asked this question said, 'Every day'. But was he talking sense? Anyone recall that chap who paid through the nose for a pair of rare Levis only to have someone burn a hole in them the first time he wore them down at his local?
Back to these records: 'In playable condition'. On your tinny little 1960s stereo?
Now, who is the Ian Levine of the 'rare clothing' scene? Who is just a collector? I always had the impression Jimmy was.
Happy to say my Paul Stuart trenchcoat - no longer with me - cost a stunning £1.99 on Ebay back in around 2008.
The seller must have been well-chuffed. D
Ditto Paul Stuart cords at £2.99.
Perhaps we should follow this up, for those of you who know your Anthony Burgess, with 'The Doctor Is Sick'.
