Rearranging the house now that my younger daughter has left home, I chanced upon a cork-board: pictures and postcards: a DC-7 in mid-flight, Mingus, Aalto, an old El Dorado Wash-And-Wear tag, an ad for Blue Note, a smiling Blossom Dearie, the business card of Gam-Gam, the Jewish eaterie in Venice - and Anthony Perkins. In profile, smiling (thus looking a good deal less tortured than usual), perched on a stool wearing Ivy scruff - including ballooning socks. Now, try and you might, you will not be able to capture that look. But get the Marsh/Gaul books down off the shelf and prepare to fall in love all over again.
Perkins: The Look.
Clift also wore his clothing in a sloppily beautiful way. Raincoat over one arm and, I think, loafers with a suit. Messed up but elegant.
I believe there is a new book coming on Black Ivy....
Yes I have those books sat nearby on the shelf next to books on Dieter Rams and chairs. Not thumbed them for a while.
