Does anyone remember Richmond Hill, who used to post here infrequently? I think he was one of the old Ivy Shop shoppers and told the tale of the run-over raincoat... His postings - unlike my own - were concise and to the point... Now, there was once some convoluted discussion about this and that and RH - puzzled - stepped in and said something like: Surely a button-down collar and loafers define the look. The trouble is, perhaps, the button-down has become a lazy style, indulged in by just about every shirtmaker in creation; and the loafer has had to be rescued and redesigned. If you think Bass are bad, you should have seen the horrors I had at thirteen. As for the button-down collar, why take the trouble? If the collar doesn't roll, why bother?
If, by the way, Richmond Hill was identifying a Brooks shirt teamed with, say, USA-made Sebago - which he might well have been - that alters the situation somewhat. Just a thought.
I see surprisingly few button down collars around on business, including in USA.
I have no non-BDs thinking about it. I don't need a huge exaggerated collar roll as some can be, but at the same time the 'barely one finger' button down seems pointless. Some of those Mod oriented BDs are too much, almost like a ruff
