Take It Or Leave It: Tasselled Loafers

The first that were ever seen - at school - and the first I ever owned, when I was thirteen.  My mother - unusually for her - relented.  They were black and exceedingly crappy and all the cool kids were onto something else by then: probably platform heels.  I would not wear tasselled now.

I once spent a month's wages on a pair of Geiger Italian tassel loafers. Now I detest the things, in any form.

Not for me. Remember those with a fringed flap. I had some in era of Style Council. Bought on Carnaby St cheap I think from my own earned money. Liked them at the time but I was only fifteen.

There's something dainty about them that annoys hell out of me.

My ultimate ivy I dislike outfit:

tassel loafers - no socks - low rise tight chinos - Brooks fun shirt - Fair Isle sweater - car coat or duffle coat - collegiate or Tootal scarf

5 of those are my kind of thing Yuca...

Used to love Bass tasseled Weejuns, can't do it now, but they can look beautiful, well the old Wilton, Maine ones could. Ivy God Jason Jules pioneered a look of tasseled Weejuns with the tassels cut off, so you're kind of getting a Bass Weejun Venetian, a Wenetian if you will, but with little holes on top where the tassels were stitched on. Oh yes so hip we were, or he was, strutting along Frith Street in no tassel tasseled Weejuns with no socks. I also recall a shorty navy mac. He did look cool in a mod-ivy combo kind of way.

Gloverall duffle coats are cool, OK? Mine is 31 years old, and fine and handsome.

Brooks Fun Shirts - God yes, just terrible. Add patch madras to that list. And the Chensvold camel polo coat. What a prick he looked in that.

I don't think the fault lay with the coat.

No to tassels on your shoes. Unless you are young with a small foot. I used to love them as a school kid when I had a small foot. Loafers don't look good on a bigger foot where as the 'American brogue' looks better on a large foot.

Yes, I would wear 5 of those things on Yuca’s list.

I remember Jason Jules saying in an article ‘I don’t like to leave the house unless I look slightly ridiculous’. Maybe we can all relate to that to a degree?

I do not understand that slightly 'kooky' aspect of Jason Jules and his loafers.  Also one or two other things I've read about him.  Only one man's opinion, but I would simply wear a straightforward pair of Bass/Sebago/whatever and leave it at that.  'Frump' I can do, the Theatre Of The Absurd I draw the line at.  (Rap on knuckles from Gibson...).

Re: Take It Or Leave It: Tasselled Loafers

First pair of Tasseled loafers would've been around '72/'73 and from Dolcis, which I wore to school and to the Youth club, some of my mates were wearing a Fringe & Tassels from Frisbees which was another shoe shop chain. My first pair as an adult with cash to splash was a pair of Cole Haan Tassel loafers from the Ivy shop Windsor, this would've been 1983 and I think they cost me £59.99, a lot of money back then.

Dolcis rings a definite bell with me, around the same time.
