... consider buying a Hilfiger shirt, seen on Monday. It was in what I think of as 'university stripe', but what some of you may call 'candy stripe', but with a navy-lined collar. Almost certainly made in anywhere but the western world. It was priced at something like £18. I looked, thought of Brooks, swallowed hard, moved on.
I do wonder, though, if I should have made my wife's 'app' thing cry out in alarm by forking out £60 for that fly-fronted Burberry's mac...
When I was in the USA back in 2019 in Texas someone said to me 'you're in Tommy country now'. TH BDs far more accepted in parts of South than RL for local reasons. Interesting how those were the two comparators.
Tommy was being sold, about fifteen years ago, in the once quite high-end shop my Dad used for basics. They obviously thought it quite 'cutting edge' at a time when I was busy trying to track down Troy Guild. Ebay, so a different ball game of course. Frankly, I'd choose RL any day of the week. RL shirts were forever turning up at a fiver a time in Oxfam etc. so I would wear them at school in warm weather, going into M&S lambswool once it turned chilly. Everything was thrifted. Then, going to work at a posher school, I began wearing Brooks suits. Eyebrows were raised.
Living in Canada in early 90s, based in Toronto, the stores were selling Tommy and RL and it was my perception that there was almost a racial divide into who bought what. I thought I should like Tommy but I never bought any of it.
It was certainly to do with 'origins' I learned later about TH / RL sad to say.
