Those Magic Words...

'100 per cent cotton.  Made In The USA'.  Now as rare as hen's teeth?  In the UK, probably.  I saw a pair of Brooks Brothers cords (a kind of russet colour) a couple of weeks ago.  Poly/cotton and made in Turkey.  The giveaway in almost any item of clothing, whether new or 'vintage': two silky tags covered in washing instructions etc. in about a dozen different languages.  Something I love about 'Golden Age' American clothing: those straightforward, colourful labels stitched in below the inside pocket.  You know: 'Mortimer's Menswear Milwaukee' - invented but you get the gist of it.  Is it gone forever?  I guess it is.

I'm unaware if lots of manufacturing came back when encouraged.  Be the same for UK post Brexit is my guess.  Things have changed, decisions and supply chains now based globally.

Re: Those Magic Words...

JFM would have known the history of what I like to think of (inaccurately, I'm certain) 'Mom And Pop Ivy' circa 1960.  Maybe it was real 'bad eyesight' stuff - you'll know the stories of the trade in Soho (and Brick Lane?).  One is simply putting a romantic gloss on it all.
