This reminds me of Shaw and his two nations divided by a common language.
As Woofboxer more or less says elsewhere, we're digging and raking over very old ground. If JFM were still running the show we could hear all about the lengthy discussions he had with Nathan, Charlie Davidson and the kid running the elevator at the Empire State Building. But he isn't and I've no intention of doing so.
I value Skipper and what he has to say; and others like him. But the raking and digging is unlikely to stop and it's possible very little new ground will be covered. As Woof said, it's a quiet corner of the internet.
Please discuss something you're interested in. It's debate only. No bitter arguments.
Some have spoken of the sinking feeling when finally getting to Brooks. US posters - or those looking in - may wonder what the devil we Brits are talking about when 'Talking Ivy'.
Small wonder, I suppose.
Since I have no missionary zeal, there is no need to fear bitter disputes from me. I respect the British's point of view, which is perceived as rather curious in the american circles in which the phenomena discussed arose.
I can well imagine. TRS refers to us as 'a dozen nutters'. About right, I should think. There was a bit of head-shaking from my old Dad when I requested two shirts from Brooks Brothers back in the late seventies. But I don't think many ordinary Englishmen travelled to NYC then. When we read - certainly by 1978/79 - that Montgomery Clift shopped at Brooks, his biographer might as well have said 'Venus'. We were living in chilly little houses in a dismal railway suburb, reading Kerouac and Burroughs. Even odder then than we are now!
I work across UK, USA and Japan. The differences are there but you just have to get on with it all. I've had fun and problems in all of them (fun in Japan, no problems).
The one thing that unites us is that Ivy as a style is fading fast into the past. I've seen no more of it around USA in NY, Texas, Charlotte, SF etc when there for work as I have in UK. Chinos, BDs etc are everywhere, beyond Ivy. After that, it's just what a person enjoys. The orthodoxies of clothing are all gone in USA and UK these days.
It could still be spotted at free Friday evening outdoor Jazz concerts, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, mid previous decade. An evening breeze and still a handful of folks that wouldn't have looked out of place at Newport....holding the line.
'Holding the line'. I like that very much.
