Nothing else on their website leapt out at me, except in a negative way. The price of the chinos, however, plus the fact they do them in my ballooning middle size, sold me. Also there were some recommendations from some of our 'experienced in Ivy ways' posters. Well: they are plain as a pikestaff. Made in India - which I suppose is not inappropriate. But I already know that I'm not going to cherish them in the way I did those thrifted Levis - which I wore and wore and wore after deciding I was too old for the David Hemmings/'Blow-Up' look (they saw me doing that look with an item of yellow Brooks knitwear back in around 2007 but were too polite to say anything). I need to decide now whether to have them professionally cuffed (they muffed the last pair somewhat) or simply cuff them myself. A size 42 and very little wriggle room!
Make sure you wash them a few times before making any alterations - they will shrink in the leg a bit.
Thanks for the tip, Uncle. I've already washed them once as they were pretty stiff. Will do so again tomorrow.
Washed and placed Silvermans and Gurteen side by side. Same stiffness that will take quite a few washes, a few differences in detailing certainly, but I'm not going to be wearing them for any activity more formal than buying groceries. The alterations on the Gurteen (100 per cent cotton BTW) went badly and they'll be going back on Saturday to have the leg length shortened (to show a bit of sock or flabby white hairless ankle) and the cuffs redone. The point is, on the many threads discussing chinos, Gurteen never get a look-in (a bit like Abercrombie and Fitch), as if they've got the black spot. Now, their cords are basically shite (sold in menswear shops in my neck of the woods and elsewhere that have been 'serving the discerning customer since 1400'; you'll know the sort of place: still flogging Farah), but these chinos, at £65, once softened down and properly cut and cuffed will be okay for that Fuck Me I've Got An Early Lecture On Einstein Take Ivy Throw It On Look'.
Colour:
Silvermans - what I'd call 'tan', I suppose
Gurteen - more or less what I'd call 'sand'.
Not unlike, perhaps, describing that end of the colour range of the plain desert boot.
