The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

Stupid question, but is anyone posting here (Uncle Ian maybe) of an age to remember them?
Ken Lovegrove asked me years ago if I did.  I'm really too young; don't really recall seeing desert boots of any kind until I was about eighteen or nineteen.  He - Ken - said they were of a different construction to the newer (now Made In Vietnam) boot.
Much searching of Ebay yields no results.  I've had English made chukka boots and Desert Trek but never a desert boot.
Did they come in more than a single colour?  Would that have been khaki?

Afterthought: this might be one of those 'Holy Grail' items that even long-time, hardcore Ivyheads like our Gibson may not have run across.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I bought a pair from the small, original Clarks shop on Regent's Street in 1990. They were still Made in UK (Street,  Somerset) at that point, but I think it was a couple of years later, just before Britpop kicked in, that they launched the Clarks Originals brand and shifted most production to Vietnam. I think the main differences were that in the UK original the toe shape was more refined, slightly more elongated, and the sole was made from natural crepe rather than the composite one they shifted to (which made them fatal on wet surfaces). There appears to be a direct correlation between the development of branding and marketing and the physical decline/outsourcing of the actual original feted article - viz. Clarks and G.H.Bass. Also going further back Gant, Ben Sherman etc... This said, Clarks now make their desert boots, and Wallabees, in Portugal and my impression, based on a superficial inspection, was that the quality had massively gone up. They had the old bendiness back, and the quality of the calf leather was good.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I remember Clarks from the original mod days - one of my mates dyed his blue, but they only came in one colour. I actually sold a pair of UK made ones on eBay several years ago, as I could never get on with the sole slipping about on the rain-soaked London pavements - they weren't named "Desert boots" for nothing!

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

The real problem for me with any of their recent product is the nudge-nudge-wink-wink 'iconic' aspect of it.  Boots with a Union Jack, boots in lurid colours.  However, back in 2012, I bought a pair of actual army issue desert boots and went yomping around Gerona and Barcelona in them.  Returning home, close to midnight and short on English money, I had to do a pretty long walk in them.  Ouch.  I wished then that I'd worn my favourite Italian dessies - or even the slightly despised Clarks'...

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I've worn Clarks desert boots for over 50 years. My last pair of made in England boots was bought from the Nottingham shop around 1994. They were chocolate brown colour and they lasted a few years so I was able to compare them to made in Vietnam ones I bought later. I seem to remember only slight differences and in a blind test I would have chosen the made in Vietnam ones. In the last few years the price seems to have risen above inflation and they seem expensive for what they are. I normally only buy them in sales.

They can be a bit slippery this time of the year with the fallen leaves on the ground. I had a pair on yesterday and nearly went A over T.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

When I was in the tropics I wore Clarks DBs a hell of a lot. (To the extent that they've all bitten the dust from so much wear.) The tropical storms didn't do the lighter colours much good though. Hopefully I'll go back some time, and invest in another chocolate pair to take with me.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I'm pretty sure we could agree with Robbie and Uncle Ian that they should be kept indoors in wet, slippery weather.  Leaves and loose gravel can be as bad as ice for throwing you off balance.  As Uncle Ian rightly says, they are desert boots.
Colours: natural/sand/khaki through to snuff/cinnamon to cola/chocolate.  Nothing grey or green, let alone bearing a Union Jack.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

A shop in Bonn used to stock Made in England ones until the late 90s, or even 00s? Stock did not seem to dry. A shop just a few 100 m away next to Uni used to sell copies from Italy. Lined ones in W
winter.

RE: Ken and Jeff, I also seem to remember them talking about a different style of Clarks’ boots from the sixties. Higher than ankle boots, 6 eyelets IIRC. I think I imagined them like Steve McQueen in The Great Escape but they were probably different. I think Jeff said he used to wear them. Maybe they were having a laugh with me but I like to think that they were telling the truth.

I have a photo of me in about 69 and I have a pair of Clarks on with Red tag Levis, turned up to reveal the sand boots. They look like today's offerings. Maybe Clarks did a couple of styles back then. I can't remember.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

What do the Ivy politburo think of the new chunky Clark’s deserts? I had site today at the Clark’s store in Berwick Street in the Soho. Of course only Mr Lovegroves opinion matters but I am interested. Clumpy sole and some decent colours. The staff were so irritating I had to leave quick sharp so just a fleeting glance was had.

The clumpy part would generally rule them out for me.  Sight unseen, however.  I once had Sanders with rather too thick a sole.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I haven't seen them in the flesh but a wedge clumpy sole is not for me. I'm not so sure about the eyelet number either. So long as they still make what I consider to be the original then Clarks can do whatever they like. Clarks do seem to have a lot of dodgy shoes on offer. Pity they stopped the UK products

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

^ Right.  Although something appears to have been made in England a few years ago: now being sold (at least on Ebay) as some kind of classic.  This is often where my problem lies - as with the old Baractua Harrington - such and such a thing becomes 'iconic'.  Instant turn-off for me.  Like a woman being touted as sexy.  I want to be able to make up my own mind.
The phrase 'design classic' is also likely to see me heading out of the door.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I shall be wearing a dodgy pair of Desert boots in a claret colour over the London stadium this afternoon.
AFS- you mentioned no grey or green but they did do a nice olive colour some time back. I agree no grey. Also some time back they tried some bright primary colours but I think they have dropped them now.
For men I can't see the point of chopping and changing colour or design if the original works.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

Marketing, I suppose, Robbie - believing their own spiel.  I think the wearing of the G9 compares well with the wearing of the classic desert boot.  Legends can be created then spun.  'So-and-so wore one therefore it must be 'cool', 'hip'...  '  They then come up with some vague idea about Mod revival/Britpop or whatever and the guy who wants a plain sand/khaki boot is faced with shit in, as you say, primarly colours: even 'grape'.
My daughter turned up yesterday teatime in big DMs.  Another source of amazement to me, the number of women who are willing to torture their feet and legs wearing this ugly boot (at almost £200 at time).

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

@ AFS - yesterday we couldn’t get a bus all the way from Marble Arch to Picadilly Circus because Regents Street was closed for display of cars taking part in the London to Brighton run today …. real proper actual vintage vehicles tracing back to when cars were literally horseless carriages.

All nice to see but further down the street was more my bag; a display of jaw droppingly beautiful E-Type Jaguars, now that is a ‘design classic’. Beside that usage of the term for a utilitarian pair of suede boots seems a bit daft.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

It does indeed.  I know marketing goes back a long way with our style of clothing but the old advertising had wit and class.  I have a lovely framed B/W ad for the 'Ivy League Stetson Hat' that would have been found in a magazine.  Very 'less is more'.  They probably knew well in advance who they were selling to.  John Simons' 'wealthy customer'.  The idea now seems to be 'More, Much More, And Then More Again'.  Not our approach.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

It's only been the last couple of years I've actually invested in Desert Boots, not Clarks but the Weejuns Hutton's. When I first got into the preppy/Ivy look (early 80's) desert boots were worn by football casuals, so for me they were persona non grata. I also lived about 8 miles from Aldershot, home of the Parachute Regiment. The Para's off duty outfit was maroon regiment sweatshirt, stonewash denim (worn at half-mast) and desert boots, another reason for giving them a miss. One thing I can say about the Para's dessies was they were like the ones Hank described Steve McQueen (Great Escape) hi top 6 eyelet.

Hi Woof, I really like them, although I've never had a pair of the British made Clarks or Astorflex, so I don't have a comparison to go by. They appear to be really well made.

Re: The Original Made In England Clarks' Desert Boot

I seem to remember reading, quite some years ago, that a teaming of tweed jackets with desert boots was a football casual look around Merseyside.  I don't know how far it spread but I was certainly eyed up by Italians mooching outside a bar in Pisa whilst wearing Clarks'.  A couple of days later, on a main street in Florence, I was asked by a young Italian, once he learned I was English, if I knew Harry The Dog.  As I was with my wife and daughter, it was rather odd.  Even odder is the fact I haven't bothered much about football since 1971.
Back on topic, I very much like the look of those Huttons - more so than, say, Playboy.
