The Eastland knot …

When I take off my boat shoes, I sometimes think of him. Him, that knot from Eastland.
Monstrosity or beauty?
If some people ITK are brave enough to cut off the tassels of the Weejuns, why not tie the Eastland knot?
Well, i´ve to admit, most of the time I thank the good lord that I'm much too clumsy to tie it.
Anyone tried it? Anyone rate it?
First hand experiences are more than welcome.

Re: The Eastland knot …

There is actually a Youtube video on how to do this.
ITK?  Sounds fucking stupid to me.  I'm sure Jason is a lovely guy but this?
John Simons is/was reputed to remove the lacing altogether.  Our Gibson will probably confirm or deny this.  I would have thought it a fine way to fall on your face.

Re: The Eastland knot …

Mm, thanks, I'm hip to its meaning.  But what does it actually mean?  If anything?

Good question, AFS. Sussed?

Re: The Eastland knot …

I'm probably the least ITK, 'sussed' person on 'Talk Ivy'.  The late JFM, bless him, used to say how cool I was by just shrugging my shoulders.  I expect he at least half meant it.
Now I'll let others have their say.

Re: The Eastland knot …

I used to have the Eastland knot, some of the lads from Harrington's started doing it, don't where they got it from as this was pre internet days. But I've gone back to tying them normal

Re: The Eastland knot …

Off-topic, WIL, and I do apologise, but those Sebago could be buggers for cutting your feet when you were least expecting it.  I remember venturing out, bright as a button, in a Madras half-sleeve, Bill's shorts and the aforesaid and returning home looking for sticking plaster.

Ah, but you're probably 'sussed'.  You take the sticking plaster with you.

Re: The Eastland knot …

I had to look this up, I suppose it would come under the category of ‘sprezzatura’ or some such malarkey.
My immediate thought is that that the top row of eyelets of the shoe are not fastened across. I’ve always liked to feel that my shoes are properly fastened to my feet in case I have to deploy unarmed defensive tactics in an urban coflict scenario. Therefore I reject this idea as tactically unsound.

Re: The Eastland knot …

I need to look it up but, unlike Woof, I have yet to find the courage to do so. As it's rated unsuitable for rucking and I'm planning on returning to the UK soon, I'll cast another dissenting note, without even having seen it. Plus I detest sprezz.

(Although I am presently wearing chinos and an ocbd with no belt - does that count as sprezz? I may add a belt when I actually leave the house.)

some sort of banal legitimacy

Re: The Eastland knot …

I adored that look circa 1989 when hip-hop would-be gangsta types would leave their laces undone.  Almost as good as having your tracksuit bottoms halfway down your backside.  If your knickers fell down and you tripped over your laces a good deal of street credibility would instantly fly out of the window.

Re: The Eastland knot …

That Eastland knot looks overcomplicated to me. My knot tying skills have diminished over the years so I won't be using it full time. Having said that I've got a couple of pairs of boat shoes and the laces are always coming undone.
I might try doing it but the end result  does look odd
