A few minutes ago an L.L.Bean USA-made flannel shirt turned up (Ebay US). Starts your day off nicely, that kind of thing, doesn't it?
I also note that, even in the UK, sellers are beginning to dispense with the services of Royal Mail and switching to couriers. This one was here before eight o'clock. The chances of seeing a postman until about mid-afternoon are remote.
Expecting a Madras shirt and some khakis any time now.
I'm expecting a pair of Lee101 relaxed fit jeans. RM delivery.
Got an email from O'Connell's.
Yesterday received 'Estuary' by Rachel Lichtenstein a book I have been meaning to read for some time. I once had a plan to write something similar. I have many connections with the River Thames from Tower Bridge to the sea.
Robbie, do you know much about places like Silvertown? I've often meant to walk beside the river in the - Beckton, would it be? - direction. But the closest I've managed to get is Victoria Park. I've heard more than once that the old East End no longer exists.
I lived the first year of my life in Silvertown. I had strong connections with the Royal Docks areas. No family living anywhere near London now.
If you are interested in walking around London, Essex and the Home Countries I would recommend John Rogers on you tube
Thanks, Robbie. I'll check that out. Have you seen those great 60s/70s films of Manhattan on Youtube? Excellent.
Robbie - thanks for the tip off re the ' Estuary' book, maybe not as strong as yours but I have links with the Thames, my Dad was a Thames Lighterman , as were some other members of his family, remember going with him to the docks when I was maybe 5/6 yrs old, sat me on the end of the barge and told me not to move , don't think you could do that nowadays ! Up till the age of 12 I lived less than 100 yds from the Thames in Brentford, just the gas works between us and the river !
Staxfan - respect to your Dad. A Thames Lighterman was a highly skilled job. I worked on the Thames Barrier and went backwards and forwards on the river using the Watermen. I think Lightermen were involved as well especially when we towed out the sills that were then positioned on the river bed. It was a good number for the guys working on the river as their traditional work was coming to an end by that time

Bob Hopkins talking to Barry Norman in 1982 about development in London and lack of access to the river.
Robbie - my Dad took redundancy in 1968, best thing he ever did, he'd had some very lean years before that working just a couple of days a week, sometimes less, it was a 7 year apprenticeship , he rowed in the 'Doggetts Coat & Badge' race which you may know is still open to Lightermen & Watermen apprentices, there was a BBC documentary on the race a few years ago,
Probably wouldn't have had my plain cap royals from the Ivy Shop Christmas '68 if he hadn't got his redundancy , good old Mum & Dad hehe,
Wow. Stax, I vividly recall a photograph of a chap in the Doggetts rig from a book on London I had as a child. I'm sure it must have belonged to my grandfather, with all his books coming to our house after my grandmother died in 1966. Forgotten all about it until you just jogged my memory.
Fantastic story Stax and a nice link to the Ivy Shop.
We had an annual rowing competition with the water guys and our foremen. The race ended at Poplar, Blackwall rowing club. Can't remember much except the watermen always won, both on the river and in the bar afterwards. HaHa.

A wash and wear cotton sport jacket that doesn't fit. I'm giving up on buying any sportcoat that doesn't have a surviving inner size tag. Even with sellers that measure accurately, there's so much room for even a half inch discrepancy to throw everything off.
And season one of Route 66 on dvd.

Sperry Topsiders. £8.50 on Ebay.
A pair of crisp, five pocket 'Sedgefield' khakis from an Ebay seller in Kentucky. Don't look as if they've ever been worn. Will probably need tailoring but that's no problem.
Another pair of USA-made Levis just turned up in the post.
A USA-made 'Hunt Club' Madras shirt didn't pop through the letterbox. The Hermes driver decided to leave the package - which was smaller than you might imagine - between the car and the house. Couldn't even be bothered to put the card through the door.
Also - forgot to mention - the original Italian poster for 'Annie Hall': also left outside.
Hunt Club was another JCPenney brand, like Towncraft. They still offered some surprisingly decent pieces up to the later 1990's.
My new Jamiesons ' Thistledown' shetland crew neck from End clothing, I looked at the ' Shetland Wooollen Co's Shaggy Dog style shetlands but I thought my 2 shaggy dogs at home would object to another in the house !, took advantage of the 20% black friday discount,
Thought it was a sensible way to spend my 'winter fuel allowance' , anyone over 60 will know what I mean !
A heavy, made in the USA Russell Athletic sweatshirt. I needed a v-neck so it wasn't easy to find one. Another name that has transferred business to Chinese factories, so the American origin is of importance to me.
Also a book, 'Fins And Chrome'. Classic American cars of the 1950s. Plenty of people posing in the photographs. The slightly older women look fabulous in that kind of Betty Draper/Elizabeth Taylor kind of way. Some of the younger men are in loafers, white bucks or sneakers. There's a variety of looks with the older men, including one of Edsel Ford in a soft plaid jacket, rather fitted, but with good shoulders and flap pockets. Nice width of lapel, too. Cuffed flannels and white bucks.
A Gant Yale Coop Archive twill in dress Stewart plaid. A £7.50 bargain which looks as though it's only been worn a couple of times.
Levi Vintage Clothing 1954
Love these jeans so much that when an offer comes up I’m always tempted
Runninggeez - that sounds like a right result, those Yale coop’s are good shirts, you’re the Guildford chap ? Do you remember ‘ Steels’ menswear ? Not Ivy by any means but use to have good Italian merino and great Italian winter-weight cotton and doeskin strides , and David was/is a very nice guy, first shop I saw Paraboot....
