Not movies, but TV: Today on "Matlock", Don Knotts clad in panel cap, tweed jacket, bd, sweater vest, flannel slacks, couldn't catch the shoes. A far cry from his leisure-suited Mr Furley, or even the salt n pepper suit Andy Griffith show days.

Much as I love a lot of vintage French flicks, this one didn't do much for me. In fact I bought it years ago and still haven't rewatched it even once: Belle de jour (1967). I vaguely recall that at one point the husband sports a perfect sack (natural shoulder, lapped seams and 2-3 roll). Maybe wearing imported clothing was a sign of wealth and sophistication at that time.

'Trading Places'. A kind of updated Ivy look - 'Preppie' if you like - goes weaving in and out, from the heavy sweaters on the WASPs at the sports club to Dan Aykroyd's Argyle sweater at the very end. The bad guy's plaid jacket is also rather nifty. But I don't think there is a button-down to be seen. Yuca would be horrified.

Yuca might be horrified by the scene in that film featuring a mirror and Jamie Lee Curtis. Her outfit, for the few seconds she remains dressed, is anything but Ivy.

Maybe more "Expected Ivy in movies" but Goodbye Columbus is on Talking Pictures TV at 22.50 tonight. I've never seen it (I read the book/novella many years ago) - is it worth hitting the record button?

Last time I saw Trading Places I don't think I knew what ivy was. I do recall that Akroyd and his chums are shown to be unpleasant, plus it was 1983, so there's no way they would have been wearing full ivy. At the same time, I'm sure plenty of elements of the look are in place.

Yes, they're very, very Look-Down-Your-Nose rich kids. WASPS, I guess. But I do love my Saks sports sweater, worn with a button-down or polo shirt underneath. Levis and sneakers complete the picture. Preppie?

AFS, I've earmarked this movie for the weekend. I found it on Amazon prime. Tried looking on Talking Pictures for it, as I believe it was shown a couple of days back, but they are not re-showing it again.

Maybe not unexpected to some, but I at any rate, was pleased to see Tyrone Power in Witness For The Prosecution (1957) last night, wearing a couple of lovely jackets, a herringbone tweed and a POW/Glen check.
Both were natural shouldered, swelled seam, single vented, two-button cuffed and three button fastening, though TP wore either the top button fastened, or all of them, Paddock-cut style, so I'm not sure if they were cut to roll through.
He teamed them with a smart, stingy brimmed flat top Trilby — what would be the right term for that? Not a Fedora? — and a tab collar shirt with narrow tie. A great look overall. I took snaps, but they'll have to wait for the update.

Maybe, but I always think of a pork pie — maybe incorrectly — as an ultra stingy brim, like the ones favoured by Laurel Aitkens and the like a few years later.
