Re: FNB.com dress shoo survey.

Favorite shoes in order:
my old black Bass weejuns
my old brown bluchers
my somewhat old sperry topsiders
Favorite color is brown.
I need to learn about construction.
My favorite type is loafer.
Bass is the only famous brand name.
I try to wear a different pair everyday in rotation.
I buff them every wearing.
I polish when they need it, around once a month.
The Bass and bluchers have leather soles.
I have maybe 6 pairs total.
I'm young and just starting out (and can't afford really good shoes yet)

You love him? He is hephaistion.

Re: FNB.com dress shoo survey.

1a.  Favourite shoo?
New Cheaney (made exclusively for my local shop) brown grain brogue Derby with Dainite rubber sole

1b.  Second favourite shoo?
Church’s Lingfield very svelte plain black Oxford on the 108 last

1c.  Third favourite shoo?
Bass Weejun burgundy penny loafer

2.  Most comfortable shoo?
Clarks Desert Boot in brown suede

3.  Favourite colour shoo?
Brown

4.  Preferred construction?
Goodyear welted

5.  Favourite type (monk, oxford, blucher, loafer etc + the design e.g., brogue, captoe)
Blucher I find generally more comfortable but Oxford for style

6.  Do you own a formal shoo (tuxedo shoo with a glued sole)?
No – unless you count my Tricker’s black velvet Albert slippers which can be and are worn with tuxedo

7.  What brand of dress shoo do you have the most of?
Church’s

8.  How many bespokes do you own?
None

9.  How often do you wear the same shoo? (rotation?)
Never more than once a week - usually about once every 10 - 12 days

10. Biggest waste of money?
They weren’t expensive but a pair of M&S Italian Derby tan shoes – just foul and given away after about three wears

11. Best value for money?
Church’s Diplomat half-brogue in sale in 2000

12. Do you look after your shoos?
a.   How often do you polish your shoos?
Buff after every wear and polish about every two or three

b.   Do you use trees?
Yes, in almost all.  Where I don’t have trees I use tissue paper to stuff the toe area

13.  Do you use topy's (a thin rubber covering over part of the sole)
Only on a fairly cheap YSL chocolate half brogue that can be worn in wetter weather

14.  How many leather-soled dress shoos? 1 - 10, 11- 20, 21 - 30, 50+   (optional question  )
11 - 20

15.  Combination heel or rubber capped heel?
Leather with rubber quarter preferred

16.  Toughest most punished shoo?
Other than a very old pair of ‘gardening shoes’ all are treated with the same respect and care – even, dare I say, my Converse trainers!!

Bridey:  how are the Cheaney shoes in general these days?  I remember seeing more of them in the USA in years past.  I think ol' Tom22222 posted about them on here not too long ago as well.

Re: FNB.com dress shoo survey.

l can't speak for the shoos with the Cheaney name, only those made by Cheaney for another company.

l've got 4 pair of the Cheaney (made for Jeffery West). Eventhough they are in the Church's group, they are certainly a couple of levels below Church's. They are goodyear constructed, but l don't think the shoos are too crash hot. The sole leather is poor because they wear very quickly, and the uppers have always appeared to be vunerable and very grain corrected (not a nice grain correction that Church's do, but far better than Prada).  l don't think the goodyear construction is too good because the stitching doesn't appear to be as tight and secure (a very slight seperation between the welt and the upper....every pair has this small little defect, but to me it's a sign of lower quality construction and tells me that the vunerable construction will give out sooner than my better goodyear shoos).

Cheaney also do full grain. The few true Cheaneys i've seen have felt insubstancial (not as solid as Church's). Whether the private label Cheaneys are up to normal Cheaney standards, l do not know. But definately not up to a Church's level.

Re: FNB.com dress shoo survey.

Shoo bastard survey

1a.  Favourite shoo? - C+J Villiers Derby Boots

1b.  Second favourite shoo? - Loake Kempton Chucka Boots

1c.  Third favourite shoo? - AE Bradley Norwegians Chillie (but polished to a dark oxblood)

2.  Most comfortable shoo? - Laszlo (NOT Vass) toecaped Derby shoo

3.  Favourite colour shoo? - redish browns/chestnut

4.  Prefered construction? - Goodyear welted - ok, prefered would be handmade...

5.  Favourite type (monk, oxford, blucher, loafer etc + the design eg, brogue, captoe) - Dress Boots

6.  Do you own a formal shoo (tuxedo shoo with a glued sole) - no. No need...

7.  What brand of dress shoo do you have the most of?
  -  many diferent ones - most of one brand is two (C+J, Loake, AE) that is if you don't count about a dozen DMs in diferent hights, colours, styles - from quite a nice brogued oxford (that I still wear as a bad weather shoe) to completely ruined 1460s...

8.  How many bespokes do you own? - none - I wish I could give a diferent answer - hmmm - bespoke balmoral boots...

9.  How often do you wear the same shoo? (rotation?) - depends on occasions - some maybe twice a week others twice a month...

10. Biggest waste of money? - Rene Lezard black suede double monks on an ugly last - no idea what I wanted to combine those with...

11. Best value for money? - C+J Roseberry pennyloafers bought really cheap from a fellow member on SF

12. Do you look after your shoos? - Yes!

a.   How often do you polish your shoos?
   - about every second wear. Depending a bit on usage. Ever seen a talkum covered, danced into the ground shoe after a Soul Allnighter? Those need intensive care FAST!

b.   Do you use trees?  - yes - but as I don't have trees for every pair I tend to 'rotate' those I have - after wearing a shoe/boot it gets a tree for at least three days...

13.  Do you use topy's (a thin rubber covering over part of the sole)
     - on a sturdy scotch grain country brogue - double leather sole. Didn't make sense to me that the sole on such a shoe is still not wearable in the rain - so I had toppies put on...

14.  How many leather soled dress shoos?  - about 15

15.  Combination heal or rubber capped heal?  - both, but I prefer the look of the combinations...

16.  Toughest most punished shoo?
   - must be either a pair of 5.10 acess shoes (climbing shoe company) which carried me through south east asia four times and were worn nearly daily - and the only care those got was when I threw them in the washing machine after each trip...

...or a pair of oxblood DM 1460s - I think I did nearly everything in those. Scootering, walking, working, dancing, sleeping - but somehow I seem to be allergic to them as everytime I slept in them I woke up with a massive headache and a foul taste in my mouth...

Re: FNB.com dress shoo survey.

1a.  Favourite shoo?  White buck

1b.  Second favourite shoo? Bass weejun

1c.  Third favourite shoo? Oxblood Wingtip

2.  Most comfortable shoo?   Bean hunting shoe

3.  Favourite colour shoo? cordovan or oxblood

4.  Prefered construction?  not sophisticated enough to care

5.  Favourite type (monk, oxford, blucher, loafer etc + the design eg, brogue, captoe)   besides the white buck, probably a loafer

6.  Do you own a formal shoo (tuxedo shoo with a glued sole)  No, but it's on my list for this year

7.  What brand of dress shoo do you have the most of?  it's like a 5 way tie

8.  How many bespokes do you own?  zero

9.  How often do you wear the same shoo? (rotation?)   The Weejuns, and topsiders (summer) hunting mocs (winter) get worn at least twice a week.

10. Biggest waste of money? A pair of Peter Huber penny loafers I have that are more contemporary looking than the weejuns.  Girls like them, but I regret losing the $350 on them.

11. Best value for money? All Bean shoes

12. Do you look after your shoos?
a.   How often do you polish your shoos? When the mood strikes me or if I happen to be wearing a polishable pair to the barbershop.  This adds up to about once or twice a month per the whole collection...but remember I don't yet wear most of the ones that need to be regularly polished as I'm still a student.

b.   Do you use trees?  I only have two sets.

13.  Do you use topy's (a thin rubber covering over part of the sole)  No. I plan to get overshoes eventually when I start wearing the 'good' (captoes and wingtips) shoes on a more frequent basis as a working attorney...I won't go to those lengths for a pair of weejuns.

14.  How many leather soled dress shoos? 1 - 10, 11- 20, 21 - 30, 50+   (optional question smile )   2

15.  Combination heal or rubber capped heal?  Depends on the shoe

16.  Toughest most punished shoo?  LL Bean stuff

A shoe philistine, I fear. Perhaps it will change as I need more beyond my loafers.
