Shifting between Aldi and Sainsburys', in search of Perrier water (unsuccessful) I saw the inevitable cock in a cap-sleeved t-shirt.  No-one obviously in shorts, though.  A couple of late middle-aged farts were wearing baseball caps with the irritating back-strap (Lacoste in one instance), sending me straight to the back of the mental queue in terms of: ought I buy one?  Something made of Donegal tweed might be preferable.

Snowing pretty hard now.  What's it like around London?

It doesn't.  Nor does it look 'timeless'.  It isn't.  What it is, though, is a precise, individualistic style that adheres to a certain set of rules whilst allowing you almost complete freedom of choice.

Beginning of pre-Christmas fitness regime saw me out mid-morning in a green quilted jacket, the heavy Shetland sports sweater, an L.L.Bean flannel shirt, 501s and slightly (but okay-ish) bouncy leather Converse.  I don't know whether it was 'Ivy' or not but it barely kept me warm.  A little icy in places.  The town I live in is basically one hill after another.  That's Derbyshire for you.  In fact, my previous address, twenty-odd years ago, was 106 The Hill.  I moved from a slightly bleak council maisonette to an 18th century, Grade Two Listed cottage.  Anyway, hills have got to be good for you - well, haven't they?

Back to walking this morning: the quilted jacket, a flannel shirt, the RA sweatshirt, 501s, socks from Murray's Toggery, the Converse. 
Milder today, the walking a little easier, a little more enjoyable. 
Meals are now small, including fish and vegetables.  No alcohol whatever.

First outing of the year for a seaweed Shetland, over aforementioned blue candy stripe Van Heusen, O'Connell's khakis, Corgi wool socks, Florscheim oxblood longwings, and army & navy raincoat to keep the storm at bay on the pushbike.

I feel a touch of 'Beat Mod' coming on.

My Levis are either in the wash or away for alterations, so I'm in the heavy USA-made black Wranglers that have caused some adverse comment, a JS Madras popover (with flap pocket, my word) and rust-coloured Falke. 

I think I'll listen to some Charlie Parker around late morning.

Yesterday was very exciting. I actually wore proper clothes. Tweed, blue Mercer, BB #1 tie, tan moleskins and my big ol' Commie-stomping Trickers.

We're doing some reshuffling at the paper and I'm going to be managing editor. In practice it means I will trade one set of sometimes tedious duties for another set, but the new gig comes with more regular hours. So in a few months I will no longer be able to complain about sitting through endless meetings. I'll be bitching about something else.

Comes with a fairly hefty bump in pay too.

I was expecting the worst, which is why I wore real clothes. In certain situations a jacket and tie functions like armor.

Spent a few days refurbing a trashed flat in cheap jeans and trainers. Took the boy to his school Christmas fair today. Good to get back into
