Re: Over There: 'Ivy Style'

Good points but there used to be great American posters on here that most of us Ivy Brits could relate to, clothes and lifestyle. The Ivy Style guys seem like a bunch of exhibitionists that dress up for the camera.

I would rate your Vetra jacket and now I want one.

'It's beginning to look very much like they're trying to turn it into some kind of on line magazine for mythical, recently graduated from Yale or Harvard college kids.'

I think it's he rather than they and you're crediting him (new guy) with considerably more thought than I believe he's put in. For some reason he loves being a self-appointed ivy expert, but for him ivy is a concept first and foremost. The clothes come a distant second. He's also an appalling dresser and can't write very well, so the end result is badly-written articles about topics loosely related to the 'ivy mindset', with very little understanding of ivy style. It's designed to appeal to anyone it can really.

'I'm sure that there are guys in the states that simply love the clothes too but you can't escape the fact that in the USA it incorporates an East Coast establishment vibe as well.'

True but in practice I always felt with US posters such as Patrick, Worried Man, farrago, Berkeley Breathes etc: first and foremost they just happened to like the aesthetics of the look. Just like most of the UK posters in fact.

^ Sound point.  JFM always emphasised The Look over any notion of 'concept'.  Playing around with ideas is fair enough but ultimately you've got to get out of bed and get some clothes on.  Thus begins the fun, the commitment, the informed choices - which are second nature to anyone who caught the bug early.
