Just reading Richard Hollis's 'Graphic Design: A Concise History'.  It's made me realise I've only ever scratched the surface with this subject.  All the modernist names keep leaping out at me, including Eames and Moholy-Nagy. 
Alvey is advertising.  He'll perhaps know this book, which is in the Thames And Hudson World Of Art series.  A brilliant set of books, never very expensive, and with barely a period in art, architecture and design they don't cover.
