Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

I'm in the market after January 1st for something better than what I currently own.  The Converse I have are fine, doing the job (as I pace the many dips, contours, hills and slopes of this town), but I'd like something classier.  White, white, white.  No trim.  No logo.  Any recommendations would be gratefully received.  The USA-made part of this is vital.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

I really don't think there are any made in USA. Rubber sneakers seem to have been the first things to be outsourced, perhaps due to the lack of expert skills needed to manufacture them. By 1990 I think virtually all US production had ceased. New Balance still make some of their lines in the US but they're not old school Ivy. They are though rather popular with Japanese Ivyists who mix it up a bit more than others do. And Mr J Simons is a fan.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

Now you've got me thinking about a chap who lives locally to me. He is American, from Ohio, and he is Ivy in the way I think only Americans can be, which is to say he is relaxed, comfortable and seemingly non-neurotic about what he wears. Typical look - nice winter tan (has a small place on a Greek island..), steel grey hair and beard, white b/d, navy cashmere crewneck, loose off-white khakis, no socks and white Jack Purcells. Always the Jacks. He just looks great, and he's cool in his manner too. And he knows all about Ivy and JS etc.. Sometimes I'm walking down the road and I'll hear "hey fella! nice Bass Weejuns!". He is an expert calligrapher and writes out invitations for Royal events. Has a little studio in a mews nearby. Some people are just, well, cool.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

Valuable advice.  Many thanks.
I paid well over the odds for secondhand USA-made Jack Purcell around ten or eleven years ago.
The Converse I've just kicked off after completing my walk are Vietnamese-made but I thought, well, if you've worn their desert boots...
Now - New Balance.  I'm pretty sure they're what my Dad used to wear into his seventies.  The old man had a habit of studying and thinking pretty hard before putting his hand in his wallet and he might have bought a pair on a trip to Maryland or Louisiana after his jazz-loving pal moved down from New England after retiring from Pratt and Whitney.  I wouldn't have taken much notice of them - and they were non-white.  They almost certainly wound up at a charity shop after he died.
But I think Robbie favours them as well as The Guv'Nor.  Seem to be well worth thinking about.
The American in Stoke Newington sounds like just the kind of chap we ought to be inviting out to lunch.  Calligraphy - top man.

Yes I'm a big fan of New Balance. Made in USA or UK except for my running shoes. I've been wearing the walking type shoes since about 1978. They just so happen to fit me well. In recent years NB seem to have become more fashionable as casual wear amongst younger people. I also used to run in the NB shorts, running jackets and vests. First stand I used to visit at the London Marathon expo.
NB may not be old old school ivy but they do for me

Thanks, Robbie.  I'm becoming increasingly convinced.  Having diabetes means taking good care of your feet - which are highly vulnerable as I'm sure you'll know.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

Another thing about NB is they do or used to do width fittings. Never owned a pair, came close during my visits to NY in the early noughties, but I'm a 3 stripe man always have been ever since my Nan bought me my first pair of trainers more than 50 years ago. They've never been worn casually only for running, football, gym etc.

I wear grey made in USA or UK NBs casually. Not very Ivy, but I would say very trad. I prefer 998s, 1500s,990v2. AFS, look at 990v1 as I think these are the Ivyist.

Checkout Rancourt for minimalist sneakers made in USA. The Carson low is their most classic and best looking model.

Thanks, OCBD.  Rancourt are on my 'yum-yum' list, much like the young Turkish women in the restaurant where I ate lunch today.  Probably likely to have more success with the Rancourt, but they did look lovely in their little party dresses.  Agree, 990V New Balance do look good.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

I've bought NB 990s in the past but looking at the latest model it seems as if they have added USA stamp to the back of the shoe whereas it used to be just on the shoe tongue. What do they think they are doing?

^ Robbie, I quite agree.  'Less is more' all too often does not apply.  Form should follow function here: no embellishments.

The ones I have tried on seem to be on the narrow side, if they do widths I would be very interested.

NB have to be tried on for the fit. The running shoes come up very tight if you chose your usual size. I run on a UK 12/12.5 when my size is 10!
I've recommended shoes to a couple of other people and they both have said they are too tight. You need to take advantage of the different width fittings if available.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

I rarely wear trainers nowadays but occasionally - and as the years pass more frequently - needs must when my feet want a rest... For the last 25 years or so I've been picking up the odd pair from Norman Walsh. Made in their factory in Bolton I'm greatly impressed with the quality and comfort. https://www.normanwalshuk.com/
Sneakers wise it's Sperry CVOs, Spring Court, Superga and Novestas (good for the wide-footed gentlemen out there). Quite liking the look of those Rancourts, though.
Anybody in/or going to Wembley New Balance have an outlet store in the London Designer Outlet. Not been for a few years but there used to be bargains galore to be had with their Made in the UK and Made in the USA models.

Good call on the Walsh trainers. I'd almost forgotten about them. I used to have a pair for cross country running. Site looks good for Made in England socks and scarves too.

Any politician or member of SAGE thinking of knocking on my door had better ensure they're wearing well-fitting running shoes.

Agree about SAGE. Aloof, disconnected and rather hysterical. And a good government, most lacking currently, would have planned a proper booster programme months ago, not sent everyone out in a panic. Awful leadership. Anyway sorry, this is about sneakers. I would like to kick Boris Johnson's fat arse with great force with my made in the Third World Sperrys.

TRS, you would have to stand in line.  Hancock, however, would be my prime target.  My naturally anti-authoritarian instincts came roaring into play last year when that clown began dishing out instructions about whether you could hug your grandma, shag the Turkish waitress etc. or not.  As the case may be.  Then - the Ferguson legover and the Cummings eye-clearing.  Genii out of bottle.

Not US made. But some very decent looking Sperry trainers on TKMaxx website today.

Re: Best USA-Made Trainers/Sneakers?

I've given in and bought a pair of New Balance.  Mid-blue, made in Indonesia, they're exceptionally comfortable.  I did a mile or so in them this morning - my daily exercise circuit.  I would not, however, consider them for everyday, casual wear, switching to Jack Purcell or Pro-Keds for any activity other than street-pounding.

New Balance is the standard off-the-rack, but if you have some special challenges that can't be solved with a pair of New Balances, there is also Hersey, which makes NB-esque custom shoes -- https://www.herseycustomshoe.com
