I have the chance to get a nice used Barbour Beaufort. They seem to bring out strong opinions. Are they really as pretentious as some folks say?
I have a similar, almost knee-length wax jacket. It's what I wear when going out with the dogs. They handle dirt and mud and dog-slobber better than other outdoors gear, and they are quiet. There are not particularly warm, and they can get a bit stiff in the cold.
If it's a used one you're looking at that sounds pretty good. They look bloody awful as long as they're new.
This is more or less my jacket (I think mine is a tad longer):

Made in the UK, mine is about 15 y.o. now.

Yes it's a used one that been rewaxed at home, and it would be free (someone I know is getting a new one and offered the old one to me). I'm not a country gentleman (or an internet gentleman either) which is why I ask.
^ I guess that's the point really. If it is old and free, take it with thanks.

These coats are fine in the UK & I bet that away from the internet they are fine in the US too.
I think Bob Church, ventile is better for, in the material :

Pretentious? Moi?
I have had a Beaufort for some 20 years now, and a Northumbria for 10.
In Italy (where I come from), they have always been traddy de rigueur, with wavering currency through the years.
I have always loved the look with jeans or cords, chukkas/desert boots and colored scarves, quite possibly out of nostalgia for what we wore in college.
So they are back to being 'in', eh? Oh well... if you like the look why don't you just wear them and forget the rest... they will be 'so last year' very soon anyway, I'm sure.
These are great coats.
I used to see a lot of American tourists in London wearing them.
Some may regard them as pretentious -I guess it depends how they are worn and with what attitude- mine is just an easy versatile jacket that can be thrown on- I think to me that is the best description- it`s just a throw on type jacket -no need for deep thought - just throw it on.

Sometime about 1980 my mother gave me a Christmas gift of a Burburry Plaid, well I guess, carry on case. 20' by 12 by 6 maybe. Nobody knew what that was back then. 20 years later I used it to carry my heavy trial files into the court house (well I always used it that way) and suddenly the compliments came in every direction about 7 years ago. Mostly from people with really dark tans. Fashion comes and goes. Function is eternal. Still use the damn thing but I try to hide it to avoid comments.
Nobody outside of England knew what a Barbour was 20 years ago. I'm not sure that it is fashionable today. You might want to ride a horse before you buy one though.
yeah, outside the horsey set and maybe some fly fishermen located in the NE part of the US of A and country gentlemen and country ladies in England would anyone know or care about these clothes?
