Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

Im partial to buzz rickson khakis. Yes, they are expensive, and yes you cant be fatter than a size 36 to wear them, but they are the perfect khakis for me. Full cut through the thighs, but not the hips, they fit me as if made for me. Manufacturing is excellent (better by miles than any khaki I have ever seen), and I love the shade of the material. The material is very hard finished twill, totally untreated. They feel completely different than 99% of khakis that are pre washed/distressed etc.  Button fly. I dont cuff my khakis, as I just like to wash them and throw them in the dryer. I once had a pair of cuffed khakis and the cuffs would get all curly and retarded looking in the dryer. Instead, I have the tailor make 2 horizontal rows of exposed stitching (those 2 rows are about 1/8 inch apart) about 2.5 inches from the cuff.

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

I've long wanted to try the Buzz Rickson model out. Are they full all the way from thigh down, or do they taper at all? Also, I think they due to the stiffness they're similar to a shrink-to-fit? Is this accurate? If so, how much do they shrink (if at all)?

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

Yes, they are full cut from the thigh down. What I really like about them is that they mastered that old fashioned cut of being slim through the waist and hips and then full cut through the thighs. They are straight legged and if I had to guess about 20 inches around at the bottom hem.  They all come hemmed, but at 35 inches or so, so you have to get them re-hemmed. I washed them 3 times and then got them hemmed and they havent shrunk since. I wouldnt call them "shrink-to-fit" in the Levi 501 sense. They shrunk maybe 5%, if that.

I absolutely love these pants and they are produced head and shoulders above all other khakis. All the interior seams are finished on the inside as well. A nice touch which they certainly didnt have to do. I couldnt be happier with them.

A lot of chinos don't seem to bother with watch pockets nowadays... When did they fall out of vogue, and were they ever especially useful anyhow?

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

These Uniqlo links keep expiring as they sell out of the items concerned!

The "Vintage" Chino is the really in-demand one, but the regular is also highly recommended by cats like Jesmond. I'm yet to invest having got rather a lot of kit on my hands at the moment. I need to clear some things out.

I think the 'Vintage' isn't in production right now - Is that right?
People are hoping for new stock in the Autumn.

Best -

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

I have the Baracuta buckle back chinos and find them to be excellent - probably my favorite chinos.  Slim but by no means narrow, really great.  Just got a pair in black as well as the khaki - didn't know they came in another color until I spoke to someone at Baracuta.  Highly recommended.

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

Golden Age stuff.
Levis chinos were awkward when you wanted to take a leak, too.  Too much fumbling around.
I passed on a pair of 501s recently for much the same reason.
Frosty's mentioning Cherokee was interesting.  That stuff turns up constantly in charity shops.  Never given it a second glance myself.
Silvermans', Bean and RL for me, currently.
Oh, Cheeky!

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

Looking back I see I paid four quid for the Primarks.

I think they are at least as good as the Silvermans. Line is slimmer too. Though I can live with a Sergeant Bilko cut.

As for fly buttons, in hindsight they were never an issue when I was still in primary school.

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

The perfect chino has long been puzzled over hasn’t it? I’ve managed to collect a storage box full of ‘not quite rights’

Fair play to Kingston1an for giving a shout out to Primark. Fairly recently AUS pointed out Next had some good ones in.

I’ve come to the conclusion that where khakis are concerned, what works best for you is best. It’s no good a 6ft, 28’’ waist bloke recommending chinos to a 5ft 36’’ waisted guy.

My most worn are M&S reg fits, Gurteen and old Gaps.

Re: Traditional American Style: Chinos

Gurteen are certainly hard-wearing, not bad value for the money, and fairly easily obtainable.
